Crashing in game lobbys

My daughter's computer crashes/freezes when entering Apex and Overwatch lobbies.  

6700 (NonK)

16GB 3200mhz Corsair RAM

FTW3 1080TI

Gigabyte GA-H110M-S2H

Corsair 750RM PSU

Runs everything else just fine, including other games like Among us, Stardew, Minecraft. 

 

Tried -

DDU and Latest Driver

Swapping GPU

Windowed Mode in both games (This was an easy Google Search Suggestion)

Unplugging all USB devices except Mouse and Keyboard.

 

Still to try - 

RAM swap with known good RAM

Verifying XMP is off (pretty sure it is, and that shouldn't cause an issue, but verifying)

 

 

When the game crashes it freezes the screen and locks the system.  Long press and hold of the power button is required to reboot.

I haven't tried any other games except those listed, but it seems to be an issue with the system running 3D tasks.  The GPU was swapped with another 1080 that works fine in a different system, but still crashed in this one, so it's not a GPU hardware issue.

 

Any suggestions?

Some game lobbies run at absurd frame rates since there isn't much to render, although I can't speak to the games you mention. THis has been known to cause problems on some systems. Many games have a lobby-only frame rate cap for this reason. You can try enabling a FPS cap of your own, or enabling vsync. Either of these can be done in the Nvidia Control Panel.

I can try this, but why would it cause a crash on just her system?  Is everyone else already setting a limit or enabling VSYNC?

Try it first, if it works we can figure out why. But it'd be due to some instability somewhere, albeit in an unreasonable workload.

No Go.  

Swapped RAM and that didn't work either.

Fresh install of windows is going to be my next move unless anyone has any other ideas.

Have you been monitoring the temperatures of the components? I recommend using hwinfo64.

 

Also try clearing CMOS if you haven't already.

I know there are about 50 of these posts a day on this forum, but if anyone finds this one - 

This was fixed by a reset of windows and reinstall of Steam, Origin and other game managers.

This was not a hardware issue.
