A weird task bar behavior

Go to solution Solved by GoodBytes,

If I pin Word and Excel to the task bar for some reason they are named "Word 2013 (2)" and "Excel 2013 (2)".

I was playing around with the new features in W8.1 update 1 when they somehow renamed themselves. PowerPoint doesn't do this. I tried simply renaming the Excel shortcut to just "Excel 2013", but it said there was already a file by that name and rounded itself up to "Excel 2013 (3)".

Why is it doing this and how can I make it stop? Unpinning and re-pinning doesn't help, neither does rebooting.

It's an RT device. Thanks

Easy fix. The problem is that you have the shortcut for Word and Excel that already exists but not registered in the registry, so it doesn't show up on the task bar. So when you pin Word, it creates a second shortcut, and registers that. The reason why it need to register things on the registry, is to maximize load time of the system. The registry is a database, so accessing info on it is quick. Fast faster than at every login it scans your computer for shortcuts and builds a list, and pins them.

Ok, so:

1- Unpin the icons that causes the "(2)" at the end from the task bar.

2- Go to: C:\Users\<ACCOUNT NAME>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar

Note: "AppData" and "User Pinned" folders are hidden ones.

3- Then simply delete the shortcuts: Word, Excel, and any other that causes "(2)" to show.

4- Once done, pin Word and Excel back, and it will be fine.

Try finding other copys of the shortcut in the installation folder itself
