GPU lanes on mobo

hey, i was wondering, a GPU needs as much lanes on a PCI-E slot as possible on the mobo, but what if multiple slots have the same lanes or even speed? can i then plug the GPU into an other slot than the first one?

If you have a beefy motherboard with, as example, 2 x PCI 3/4 x16 - you should be good with whichever.

However - I think, for AMD at least, the 2nd PCI x 16 goes through the chipset before reaching the CPU, whereas the 1st goes directly to the CPU. So there might be a slight performance impact - though I have no clue if it would be noticeable
