RAID is a method of using a group of hard drives to make a single virtual hard drive. Depending on the RAID type you choose, you can optimize the virtual drive for fault tolerance, performance, size, etc. It is mainly used to provide redundancy, especially in the enterprise world. However, it is not a substitute for a proper backup of your data.
