Old System Upgrade

Go to solution Solved by GeorgeMKane,

You should definitely consider upgrading your cpu, motherboard, ram, and probably your case as well. I know you said you want to keep the same motherboard, but it wouldn't be worth it to only upgrade one generation.

I would recommend saving up some money, and going for either a Intel Upgrade or Ryzen upgrade.

You'll definitely be looking at the used markets for gpu's, if you want anything within a decent price.

So, I have a system that I was given/hand-me-down but the thing is; it's fairly old. So I upgraded it. After I had upgraded it, it struggled to play games even at 1080p very low settings. (Such as Cities Skylines, Minecraft, Fortnite amongst other games. For example; recording Minecraft at 60fps on 720p with OBS low settings and then editing that footage with DaVinci Resolve 17 set as low as possible would be painful to make and use) Now I am thinking of upgrading once again, to be future proof and game and record. I do wish to keep the motherboard and Power Supply though, as it has served well for me. Below are my current specs and what I would like to have in my system :D

I hope I can get help and see if the upgrade is worthwhile or a bad idea to do and just wait for a whole new system.

Specifications

CPU: i5 2400 3.1ghz

MOBO: GA-H61M-DS2

GPU: MSI GT 1030 GDDR5

RAM: 12gb Ddr3 1600 mhz

PSU: 550w

STORAGE: 3x 500gb HDD 1x 500gb SSD (HDD for YouTube and Games and SSD as boot drive)

Wishlist Specs

i7 3770k 3.5ghz

*Same Mobo*

GTX 1080ti or GTX 1070

16gb Drr3 1600mhz

*Same PSU*

500gb SSD for YouTube, 500gb SSD as boot drive, 1tb SSD for games.

I hope the list above works, I don't mind a GTX 1070 up to a GTX 1080ti as it is enough for what I plan to do. Thanks! :D

Max I would go for is a 1070ti here. Also what is your specific PSU?

pretty old indeed I have some upgrade ideas here

a used cpu and gpu if you can find it should do.

Probably a better idea when you get the money is start new. Keep the psu and SSD and maybe the case and ditch the rest. Something with 16gb ddr4 ram and some of the newer models of cpus gpus. 1070, 1660, 1650 Super are some good GPU recommendations

OUTDATED JAN 2021 ===========> Check out my pc building guide! might be useful tho

It's great for planning new builds, getting a reference on where to start, or seeing what you need to play what games.

It also shows what I recommend for upgrading your stuff!

cpu - ryzen 5 3600

gpu - gtx 1070

ram - (2x8) 3200mhz

ssd - 970 evo plus 500gb

ssd2 - 860 qvo 1tb

mobo - asrock b450m hdv r4.0

psu - evga b5 550w bronze

This greatly helps in my decision. Thank you.

I will look into upgrading the CPU, Mobo and RAM and I will sticking with intel.

Lesson Learnt; Do not upgrade a by one generation and buy things that wont last. Buy ahead as it is worthwhile more, and will last way longer.

Thanks Again.
