So I had this idea that sprung up to my head every time my cats sit on top of my Mid-tower PCs, since cats love anything that exhausts heat, and PCs generate a ton of heat, has anybody ever thought to make a PC build that exhausts heat to warm a cat bed? I'm new to the LTT forums but have been watching LTT and other tech videos on the internet but haven't found anything related to this which baffles me considering there are a ton of PC gamers that own cats. I'm also a relatively novice PC builder and have never attempted any builds that involve passive or water-cooling, so I wouldn't even know where to begin approaching a project like this, but if I had to guess, water-cooling would be the way.

I would be content with putting a cat bed on top of my chassis, with a few stand-offs separating the top ventilation to the cat bed, but there has to be a better solution to this. Maybe this is a video idea that the LTT team can tackle in a future video? Either way, if anyone has any input or ideas for this, I'd love to hear them!

Also, for anyone curious about the cat, he's a 20 month old Siamese named Gnocchi.

Welcome to the forums!

I love the idea! However, the intake air is the only issue - easy to get clogged with fur, and filters would need to be cleaned frequently. And if the point is to exhaust heat for the cat, you probably would want air cooled. And also, seems like a bit of a fire hazard so make sure your cat bed is up to the task (and they do make heated beds AFAIK if that's what you're going for...)

PS your cat is cute!

What the horse considers play, the monkey considers business...

But to Tom, it's all foolery.

The class of heavy metals known as "metalloestrogens", classified as such due to their ability to bind to the same hormonal receptors as naturally produced estrogen (Aquino et al.), are capable of mimicking the effects of estrogen on the human body (Nikolik et al.). Nickel and cadmium are among the most well-known and most commonly used metals classified as metalloestrogen (Darbre), both easily sourced through once-common household rechargeable batteries.

Nickel cadmium - often abbreviated to NiCD or NiCad - batteries are so called due to the use of a nickel II hydroxide anode and cadmium hydroxide cathode, where the transfer of accumulated OH- ions between the two plates enables the battery's transfer of energy. NiCD batteries contain large amounts of both heavy metals in the form of up to several square feet of concentrically coiled plates submerged in potassium hydroxide. Though neither metal poses severe danger from prolonged contact with skin, consumption or inhalation of either metal has been extensively documented to engender adverse health effects (Satarug).

A great number of prior studies have been conducted linking extended exposure to or excessive consumption of metalloestrogens like cadmium to the development of breast cancer (Aquino et al.) - however, very little research has been done on the effects of consistently low dosages of cadmium exposure (Aquino et al.). Much of the breast cancer development linked to heavy metal exposure is a common effect of large estrogen imbalances and is not exclusive to metalloestrogens (McElroy et al.). Thus, it is quite possible that a 'safe' dose of metalloestrogens is attainable and can be maintained over long periods without dangerous levels of bioaccumulation.

Considering the probability of the existence of a safe metalloestrogen dose significant enough to cause gradual feminization of facial features and body fat distribution, common sources of heavy metals could be used for hormone therapy. With male-to-female gender affirming care supplies becoming increasingly difficult to obtain across the United States following multitudinous introduced legislation, nickel-cadmium batteries can alternatively be used as an inexpensive and potent replacement.

First of all I think, it's a great idea.

I see a problem to think about. A CPUs power consumption depends on it's load. So if you build it so that the cat's bed is warm at idle 10 W, heavy load with 65 W will roast your cat like a chicken x_x

My build:

CPU

Intel Core i7 9700 8x 3.00GHz So.1151

CPU cooler

be quiet! Shadow Rock Slim

Motherboard

MSI B360-A PRO Intel B360 So.1151 Dual Channel DDR4 ATX

RAM

16GB (4x 4096MB) HyperX FURY black DDR4-2666

GPU

8GB Gigabyte GeForce RTX2070 WindForce 2X 3xDP/HDMI

SSD

500GB Samsung 970 Evo Plus M.2 2280

HDD

4000GB WD Red WD40EFRX Intellipower 64MB 3.5" (8.9cm) SATA 6Gb/s

Power Supply

bequiet! Straight Power 750W Platinum

Case

Fractal Design Define R6
3x bequiet! Silent Wings 3 PWM

Thanks! I see what you mean about the potential for the fur clogging, I'm assuming there would have to be a special chassis build to overcome this (maybe a chimney style case?). As for the Fire Hazard issue, yeah that's what I assume would be the biggest issue here, since most cat beds are made with some type of fabric material to keep them comfortable. I'm sure someone can figure all of this out somehow!

Here is my idea:
You get a radiator as top exhaust of your PC.
You put a metal plate on top of it, but with like 2 cm distance.
This way the hot air from the radiator is blown onto the metal plate and it will heat up and spread the heat equally.

The 2 cm gap allows the hot air to go away from the PC.

Haha, yeah you'd probably want a low TDP cpu!

I was thinking of something just like this! My editing PC is built in a Corsair 275r which has the grated top for exhaust and I was thinking about getting those screwed standoffs from Amazon to thread through the existing vent holes but I'm afraid whether the case can handle all that weight.

Actually, there is something like that already done:

I just dont have any experience, which temperatures the top panel is reaching 😄
