Hey everyone,

So my gf and I are nearing the end of our Tiny House on Wheels build and as we get closer I am starting to realize that my PC is probably going to take up too much space.

Basic Specs are:

Thermaltake core p3

ryzen 5800x

rtx 3090 FE

32 GB ddr4

850w PSU

my setup in general, however, will not be much of an issue. What I'm really worried about is space UNDER my desk.

I have a 3 monitor setup which might seem like overkill but I do a lot of work from home and could not function efficiently without all 3. To accommodate this, we built our stairs in such a way that my desk will be built into the wall underneath the top step which is more like a landing. which is great for space ON the desk but underneath is a wheel well that has been framed in so I would much rather go with a laptop that I can just dock.

So my question is what would be a reasonable price I could get for my current system? Would it make more sense to just sell the individual parts? and with that money what would be the best Intel based gaming capable laptop/dock combination to replace this and still support my monitor setup.

Thanks

I'm not so knowledgeable on how much you could sell your setup for, as I'm more rounded with laptops, but I imagine you'll be upwards of $3-$3.5k for this setup, especially considering you're packing a 3090 ( 😳 ). Heck, probably even upwards of $4k, though I'm not sure if you'd be able to get this by selling parts individually or as a whole.

As far as laptop/ workstation replacements go, the first thing that comes to mind is the Razer Blade Pro 17". On this website listed below, there are two options:

  • Full HD 360Hz
    • 2.4GHz 8-core Intel i7-11800H processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.6GHz, with 24MB of Cache
    • Windows 10 Home
    • 17.3" FHD 360Hz, 100% sRGB, 6mm bezels, individually factory calibrated, 3ms Response Rate
    • NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX 3080 (8GB DDR6 VRAM)
    • 1TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe upgradeable to 4TB + Open M.2 Slot (Supports 2-sided NVMe Drive), upgradeable to 4TB SSD
    • 32GB DDR4 3200MHz dual-channel memory (slotted)
    • Anti-Ghosting
    • Per-Key Backlighting, powered by Razer Chroma™
    • $3,299.99 USD
  • 4K Touch 120Hz
    • 2.5GHz 8-core Intel i9-11900H processor, Turbo Boost up to 4.9GHz, with 24MB of Cache
    • Windows 10 Home
    • 17.3" 4K 120Hz Touch Display, 100% Adobe RGB, 6mm bezels, individually factory calibrated
    • NVIDIA® GeForce® RTX 3080 (16GB DDR6 VRAM)
    • 1TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe upgradeable to 4TB + Open M.2 Slot (Supports 2-sided NVMe Drive), upgradeable to 4TB SSD
    • 32GB DDR4 3200MHz dual-channel memory (slotted)
    • Anti-Ghosting
    • Per-Key Backlighting, powered by Razer Chroma™
    • $3,699.99 USD

While the 4K Touch 120Hz model seems a bit overkill in terms of display, I think it makes up for it considering the 16GB VRAM version of the 3080. There are probably better options out there in terms of price and cooling, but like I said, this was the first thing that came to mind.

Though, depending on what work you do, I wonder if Quadro RTX-equipped laptops would be better suited for you, especially considering that they can still do pretty good at gaming, though noticeably less than a traditional GeForce RTX card.

would getting an ITX Board and a smaller build be possible?

@tkitch also makes a good point, though I think the issue with this - and considering that our friend would have limited space to put it in their tiny house on wheels - is having enough space to let this thing to breath. For example, I have a friend at my college who has a very, very powerful desktop tower in his dorm, rocking a 3090, 128 GB memory, idk how much storage, but a lot, and I forget the CPU, but it's got to be something with at least 8 cores, though I imagine more like upwards of 10. They store it in a gigantic, 50 pound case - freaking craaaazy - and even with his very high-quality cooling setup, this thing can still act as a heater for his dorm when pushing it hard. So, not sure how well this would work out.

It would be but especially with the CPU/GPU combo I have I'm worried about cooling as well as space.
finding a small form factor case that isn't a huge pain to build in that also has decent cooling is like finding a 3080 for msrp (ok maybe not that hard)

these are both good options thank you. I'll keep poking my head around and comparing but I just figured the community here would have some consensus on the best models.

Thanks again!

I'm also curious because I'd like to find a great laptop for you, what kind of work are you doing at home, because depending on the work you do, these Razer Blade 17 laptops may not suit you the best. Sure they have great CPUs and GPUs, though they don't offer the benefits of the Quadro RTX and RTX A-series cards with applications like CAD, coding, and other work. GeForce RTX cards are really meant and designed for gaming and for other recreational usage, at least from what I know and have seen.

Razer also makes a laptop with a Quadro RTX GPU, the Razer Blade 15 Studio Edition, which packs a Quadro RTX 5000. This GPU has 16 GB of video memory like the 3080 in the 4K Blade Pro 17, however compared to an equivalent RTX A-series GPU, it has half the CUDA cores, essentially making it considerably slower than the equivalent A-series (in this case, it would be the top-of-the-line RTX A5000, which has 16 GB video memory). Heck, even the RTX A3000 with only 6 GB of video memory has almost 1,000 more CUDA cores than the Quadro RTX 5000. Now it should be said that this Razer laptop is a couple years old by now, but I'll list it here just because 🤷‍♂️ https://www.razer.com/gaming-laptops/Razer-Blade-15/RZ09-0330QEM3-R3U1

If you go on NVIDIA's website, they also list some manufacturers that produce laptops with their professional GPUs. https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/design-visualization/rtx-professional-laptops/

I also don't know if you would also consider AMD GPU's because I don't know if you enjoy some of the features that NVIDIA has over AMD, though maybe after doing research you may like AMD's features over NVIDIA's. I'd say if you're still curious about something like this, and if you have a boss/ mentor for your work, try and ask them and see what they have in their computers if they, too are doing similar work as you.

Also @gerstworth, I love the Tony Soprano profile pic, lmao. I literally just finished watching the Sopranos a week or two ago. Such a good series!
