New Build Not Posting

Go to solution Solved by keroro7788,

Hunch was right. I got a replacement CPU and system posted just fine. Everything is normal now 馃檪

First time I've had a part DOA.

Hi all any advice appreciated.

System specs:

CPU: i5-11600K

Storage: Samsung 980 M.2 SSD - 1TB

RAM: 16x2 Teamgroup 3200Mhz CL16 DDR4 RAM

Motherboard: Gigabyte Z590i Vision D Motherboard

GPU: EVGA RTX 3060 XC3

PSU: Corsair SF600 Gold

Cooler: Lian Li Galahad 240mm AIO Cooler

Case: SSUPD Meshlicious

Everything is brand new except for the CPU. I bought it from Central Computers from the Bay Area and they said it is a OEM/Tray CPU.聽

What is working:

The system turns on and can stay on with normal fan speeds. Fan and AIO pump lights turn on normally. Can hear pump functioning normally. RAM lights also turns on.

What isn't working:

Posting to bios

Things I have tried:

1. Reset CMOS

2. Reseat RAM

3. Seat only 1 stick of RAM in DIMMA1 Slot

4. Clean RAM and RAM slot

5. Reseat CPU (checked pins to make sure nothing was bent)

6. Clean thermal paste for CPU and cooler

7. Connect from HDMI port of GPU to HDMI port on monitor

8. Removed GPU since CPU has integrated graphics

9. Tried DP from Integrated graphics to current DP monitor

10. Did 1-6 with the GPU removed

11. Double/Triple checked to see if cables are seated properly...

I'm at a loss now as to what else to try before I look at replacing parts one by one. My primary suspicion is the CPU. Would love to hear any thoughts and insights.

One thing I might want to try is flashing BIOS but I can't currently access gigabyte's website at all. That said as far as what is written in the manual. 11th gen Intel processors should be supported out of the box without the need for bios update but please correct me if I am wrong.聽

Thank you.

That's a tough one, you can try taking one of the RAM sticks out and seeing if it posts and then try with the other one to verify it isn't one of those, I had that problem with a recent build. I also tried to access gigabytes site for you to check the CPU compatibility list but that's not loading, they may be having site issues, basic description says it should support your CPU though

EDIT: just realized you tried the ram thing my bad

Diagnostic leds on the motherboard ?

Did you try 2 monitors or only one ? if only one, try a tv ?

Can you try another psu ?

@davidsondakodaThanks for trying to help I appreciate it.

@leclod聽Unfortunately this motherboard does not have diagnostic leds 馃槙

I tried on two different display (one monitor and one tv).

Thanks for the suggestion on PSU that's something I haven't try yet. I plugged my SF750 from another system in. No change.

Just to be sure, do you have experience ? might another person see things you didn't

(of course, you seem to have experience)

@leclodUnfortunately I don't have another person that can check things for me. Not for another聽month or two until my friend comes to visit. I wouldn't say I'm an expert but I have done several custom builds and dabble in building pcs as a hobby.聽Just built one with a custom loop with hard tubing for myself few months ago. This one is simpler build聽for another family member to replace their existing computer which happens to be my first build from a long time ago. Ironically this seems more complicated than anything else I've attempted before this D:

It's pretty late here now. I'll disassemble the whole system tomorrow and put it back together from scratch to see if I missed anything. Again thank you for the suggestions.聽The two components I can't test in another rig聽are the motherboard and cpu since my personal build聽is AMD based and聽I would prefer not to take apart my custom loop XD Another thing I thought that could be an issue might be RAM speed but 3200 MHz seems to be supported out of the box as well. Gigabyte's website is so terrible I still can't get to support page to see what bios version they have available.

Shot in the dark, but try unplugging all USB/other attached devices except monitor and see if it will post. Rare but could be an issue it has with an attached device such as a keyboard

Good suggestion. I tried that as well but forgot to list it after it failed to boot for the first time. I've had that happen to me occasionally in the past with one of my first PCs XD

Update here.

In taking apart the system and looking at each connection and part in greater detail and fresh eyes.
I did miss one thing last night.

The motherboard does not have video out. The displayport is a IN port. And so I had to plug GPU back in for continued testing.

GPU turns on, fans spin. Was able to check gigabyte's website for part compatibility and everything I'm using is listed on there as being compatible. One other suspicion I have might be a bad CPU power cable from the SF600. But I can't readily test that yet as the CPU power cable on my SF750 in another build is very tightly wrapped and not easily accessible.

Also found that the motherboard has speaker headers for diagnostics but I haven't used a board like this before. It's two pins and I'm not sure where to find a 2 pin motherboard speaker that can attach to it. Any help there would be appreciated.

Just out of curiosity . If you shut down your pc normally . Wait for about 30 seconds and then turn it back on . Does it boot normally ?

(When you shut down don't turn off your screen with the power button on the screen just wait for it to go into sleep mode)

After I swapped out the faulty CPU it's been functioning perfectly fine. System turns on and off as normal. As I was doing updates and rebooting the system. Turned it off to add my second stick of ram after all updates were done. Adjusted the fan curve. All is well.

Before swapping out the faulty CPU though, it didn't post at all; the only way for me to turn it off was through the power button. I've left it on for variable amounts of time to check temps on various components to see if power was going to them. Longest was a few minutes. It wouldn't boot regardless of what I did.
