Minecraft Hardcore Mode?

Hopefully someone one can help me. My son plays a lot of Minecraft (I know just enough to be dangerous). He wants to enable hardcore mode. We've switched to the Java edition. I've been able to setup a local Minecraft server and am able connect to it. I've edited the level.dat file.

 

The hardcore setting is enabled in the level.dat file. I also tried changing the difficulty level in the level.dat file. I've tried using the gamemode command through the server commands but it gives me a invalid argument error.

 

In game in options it says the difficulty is hard, but the hearts are the "hardcore" hearts. When you die it gives you the option to spectate or quite like we would expect in hardcore, except when we spectate it just spawns us again.

 

Any ideas what we could be doing wrong?

 

Windows 10 machine, Minecraft 1.17.1.

Does it spawn you as if nothing happened, i.e. you can do everything you'd normally be able to do?

 

It makes sense that it spawns you again, it's just that you're a spectator now and can't (or shouldn't  be able to) do anything.

 

P.S. been a while since I've played Minecraft and haven't checked 1.17 yet, things might have changed.

I just tested with a fresh server and all I did was change hardcore=false to hardcore=true and then when i died ingame I became a spectator when I respawned.

 

Edit: You want to change hardcore to true in the server.properties file, not the level.dat

Oops, I should have made that clearer. Yes when we spawn again we can interact, mine, and "kill" things like normal.

Thank you! I figured we were doing something wrong. Modified it in the server.properties file, and everything worked right away. Sadly I thought getting the server up and running would be the harder part!
