Hi All,

I have a really strange issue. My laptop (Acer Aspire v5-591g) doesn't recognize any USB 2.0 devices when any operating system (Windows 10 or Ubuntu) booted up, however I can use USB 2.0 keyboards in the BIOS.

The laptop has one USB 2.0 port which stopped working a long time ago. It has power, but looks like data doesn't go through (except in BIOS).

A couple of months ago, my USB 3.0 ports stopped, and when I opened the case it turned out that the USB 3.0 port has a battery charging chip which is shorted and that's causing the problems. I removed that chip carefully, so the short issue is resolved, but that port doesn't have power anymore, which is OK as far as I know.

But I still can't use my last USB 3.0 port. It recognizes any USB 3.0 device and works without any problem, but I cannot connect USB 2.0 devices, which is strange to me. I can't even see USB 2.0 Root-HUB in the Device manager:

I tried to boot-up a Linux live disk because I thought it's a driver issue, but it didn't worked. I also tried to downgrade my BIOS, didn't work. I tried so many things (removing USB hubs, fixing registry entries, etc.) but nothing helped. The only thing why I don't think it's a hardware problem is that it works in BIOS without any issue. I used USB 2.0 keyboard to test it, and when I was in BIOS it worked without any problem but when I booted into Windows or Ubuntu, it stopped working.

Do you have any idea? I'm a CS Engineer, I tried my best but couldn't find the root-cause of this issue.

Thanks for your help,

Rich
