Hi i have a asus rog g531 laptop and have completely messed up, I was installing windows 11 and I completely forgot I put a bios password in place. I can’t remember what it is at all and have tried everything i can imagine over the past day to fix this. I believe the bios firmware was version 308. I’ve tried everything from removing the cmos battery and letting the bios reset to using the alt + r method with no luck. From what I can tell the bios I have is newer then my of the online forums help methods. Can someone please help this is my only laptop and really need it for uni

Reflashing the BIOS using a programmer is the only way I know of. You will need another working computer, a CH341A and you have to disassemble your laptop.

If ive heard right, that bios is the last one that allows user undervolting so if you go to a newer version = rip undervolting if you even care

Flashing the bios with a bios programmer should clear the nvram or whatever it was called that stores the bios password

Hmm, true, this would work but wouldn't it be a bit complicated?

Ye reprogramming the bios with a bios programmer will work

Would I not have to unsolder the security chip to do this? Or is there a way to do it with the motherboard intact? This is such a pain because from what I can see previous bios versions were so much easier to bypass the lock

Depends

I have decade old lga 775 asus boards so its just a matter of taking out the bios chip and plugging it into a bios programmer, i did swap the bios for a better one for ocing reasons

Though most boards have their bios chips soldered on so youll have to use a clip which can be quite unreliable, or desolder the bios chip and solder it onto the programmer

The bios chip is near the cmos most of the time

And? This is the only solution to OPs problem. Clearing CMOS wont get rid of the password, nor there are any other ways of clearing it. If OP doesn't want to do it, it is a major hassle either way.

Many CH431A Programmers come with a clip you can just clip onto the BIOS chip itself. You shouldn't need to remove any components from the board.

Yes i know it is a good solution, but i mean if you do something wrong, then couldn't you kill your bios or the bios chip?

You dont have to desolder anything. You can get a test clip to make contact with the chip without desoldering it. I have one around but not sure what they were called.

That’s the other thing. I can’t find a motherboard layout diagram for this laptop anywhere so I’m looking at all the parts like a squirrel trying to find shit

Ok that actually sounds like a great option then! Do you know where I can get one?

Lmao

If you have it connected in reverse then the bios chip does heat up quite abit, but from my experience hasnt killed a bios chip yet

If you are talking corrupted bios then you can just reflash the bios with the bios programmer

Ive even installed an msi p45 neo bios on my p5q, doesnt seem to work after restarting but then again i can just reprogram the bios and all is good

Ahhhh, it doesn't break the chip, good.

I personally use this one, https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07SHSL9X9?psc=1&ref=ppx_yo2_dt_b_product_details and its worked well. Pretty much all the CH341A programmers are the same however.

Yes but no.

It can be as simple as entering a few times the wrong password but there are also devices where it is nearly impossible.

Also the use an EEPROM programmer advice won't work on good laptops. Only on old and shitty ones this is still the answer.

Depends. A lot of time you can program the eeprom in circuit.

What would you suggest then? Is it worth a shot trying this I don’t really want to brick my laptop 😕

Make a backup before flashing the new content.

Anyway. I don't know anything about Asus ROG neither that model in particular so just give it a try. With this being a gaming laptop there is a higher chance this method will work (compared to business device where you could nearly guaranty this would fail).

Okay cool I’ll give it a try, another thing I’m struggling with is locating the eeprom chip I can’t find schematics of the board but I did find a replacement on aliexpress could you take a look and see if you could spot it much appreciated either way

You don't need to replace that. Also it doesn't need to be exactly the same part. A few specs need to match but that's not much of a limitation.

No sorry I was wondering if you could spot the bios chip on the board?
