I have only have a total of around 600gb of storage despite having a sata ssd and a hdd. Planning to buy a m.2 to improve my storage space. In the market for ssd's around the 50-70$ range (on a budget). I have a Mortar Max btw if that makes any difference when it comes to choosing a m.2 ssd, Thanks!

I would think a SATA M.2 drive would fit that budget better if you're trying to maximize size and this isn't going to be a boot drive. 500GB is about the best you're going to find with that budget.

Something like this. (BTW major retailers allow you to select a budget, and form factor (M.2) and it'll list all your options. This is just the first one in that list when I did that on Newegg)

Worth noting for the future that your motherboard only supports SATA M.2 drives in the second slot.

Thanks for responding! My bad, forgot to mention that the new ssd I'm planning to buy will be my boot drive, since m.2 is faster than regular sata ssd right? MY current ssd btw is just the Kingston A400. Currently looking at the Samsung 980 500gb. Will this be a good choice for my system? Thanks again!

Alright so little lesson as this is a common misunderstanding. SSD's today for consumer systems come in 2.5" and M.2 form factors.

M.2 is just that, a form factor, it doesn't specify the actual protocol used.

In the M.2 space, you have two types. SATA (exactly the same as the SATA 2.5" SSD you already have) and NVMe.

SATA M.2 SSD's, like i mentioned, will be no faster than your 2.5" SSD's as they both use SATA to communicate. NVMe on the other hand is an aspect of the PCI Express protocol and significantly faster in raw transfer speed, but with that comes increased price.

This is a list (using Newegg's drill-down function) of NVMe drives in your price range:

https://www.newegg.com/p/pl?N=100011693 601193224 600640786 4026

If its going to be a boot drive, I suggest an NVMe drive. Now, in real world applications, the difference isn't that noticeable but if you're going to get one, might as well be NVMe. 500GB is still the price range i'm seeing for your budget. That SN750 for $75 if you can bump your budget is a very quick drive.

Thanks for the clear explanation and will take a look of your recommendation. Thanks!!!
