Two things.. If i'm understanding correctly he has the dock you need already at home. Ask him what it is and buy that?

Second, why not just connect the display cables from the dock to secondary inputs on the monitors. Plug in the laptop, press a button or two on the monitor and you're done.

I work IT and had to replace someone's Surface Pro Laptop which he had a dock for with a Dell Thunderbolt Laptop. The docks we have for the laptops have their display cables run from the dock into the monitors and the have Laptop connect via thunderbolt. (so no pc is involved just a dock and laptop)

The problem is that with his Surface Pro he had a dock for home use that would take over his home pc's monitors when it was plugged in and when he unplugged his Surface Pro he could still use his PC like normal. We are trying to avoid him having to move display cables around every time he plugs in.

Is there a product like that for laptops that let him use his pc monitors like normal until he plugs in his laptop? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Let me know if you have questions or clarification.

He went from a Surface Pro to just a normal Laptop. That surface dock has proprietary connector that only works for Surface Pro's.

That is a good point I didnt even think that the "automatic" switching was happening because the monitors didn't have a display signal so they switch inputs to one that would. So i think that a normal dock would work just fine. Or just an hdmi cable for that matter. Sorry kinda a stupid question but it let me think out loud lol
