I'm looking to buy a laptop, and it's primary purpose is going to be media consumption with light gaming as a secondary, so it doesn't need to be very powerful.

I want something in the 500$ - 600$ range, or cheaper if possible. I'm also not looking for anything too big(the thinner the better), as long as the screen is no smaller than an iPad screen size. This is going to replace my old Ipad 1 that I use to watch media at work.

I won't be picky about specifics; I don't need touchscreen, an SSD, or anything fancy. As long as it has a decent 1080p screen (preferably IPS, but if I have to I'll do without.)

I just want some suggestions that I can look at.

Thanks.

If it's just to watch media why would it have to be a notebook? a tablet is great for just watching movies and consuming media in general and ipads have excellent screens (better than those on 1080p notebooks you find out there)

If you still want something very portable but with a 1080p ips screen I would recommend you take a look at the first gen microsoft surface pro. You can get a version with a 128GB ssd for 499$ and it's excellent for the price. A full core i5 cpu instead of some ARM bs like the ipad or android tablets or RT tablets and it has a wacom stylus, a really nice 16:9 screen (better form factor than an ipad for watching movies) and is just an all around great notebook.

Only downside is the battery which lasts around 4 hours, but if you're using it mostly at work then it shouldn't be a huge issue.

I do really like the portability of tablets, but I don't really want a new iPad because I would still have the same limitations of iOS, and other tablet OS' would have similar limitations, but I never thought of the Surface, but don't the RT versions have software limitations? If it's only the Pro versions that have full windows 8, then I may go for something else.

Like I said the non-RT surface pro costs 499$ at the online microsoft store and other outlets. Core i5, 1080p screen, all that schnazz
