College Computer Setup Questions

I will be going to college for engineering soon and am debating what I should get for my computer setup. I am thinking that I should get a decent not crazy gaming laptop to use for everything such as CAD, gaming, or Word. The other option I have been thinking about is upgrading my desktop and then getting a laptop for bringing to class and work outside my dorm. At my dorm I could have the desktop and do all the heavy CAD work and gaming there. To those who read this what would your opinions be for what I should bring?

It depends on what budget do you have for everything.

Just buy a computer suitable for your gaming needs. You can use pretty much any laptop for the CAD work necessary for an engineering degree. I did it on a 1st gen mobile i5, fairly recently.

Get a gaming desktop and then an ultrabook. Gaming laptops are horseshit for school life and work

Even though I don't have a gaming laptop, I have a heavy Dell XPS 17 (I wanna say it's around 5 LBS), and its not the best to carry around, but hey, it's a good workout for my back, lmao

I think it's also important to consider, too if you school has good desktops/ computers for use - like in your library or if your college has a specific Engineering wing/ college/ area. If they do, and they're designed to handle or are overkill for your Engineering software/ applications, I think this'll just further reinforce the idea of getting a notebook laptop for notes/ schoolwork and then a gaming desktop for, well,  g a m i n g .

 

For example, my RA in my dorm is majoring in electrical engineering, and throughout the years she's been using a 4, or even 2 core i5, 8, or even 4 GB memory, 128 GB Microsoft Surface tablet (idk what specific model), and whenever she needed to work on a heavy engineering project, she used the school's computers because they were the tits. Then, she wasn't the biggest gamer, but she does have an Xbox One to fit her gaming needs, which I respect because before getting this XPS 17 in the recent months, I was a console gamer, too. FYI, we're in Pennsylvania State University Park, and most of the buildings and equipment have been renovated recently, so this is probably why. Plus, Penn State is able to work with a pretty big budget, too. 

 

However, ngl, I kind of like the fact that I can still take my big XPS 17, plug it into one of the TV's in my dorm's lounge area, and play AAA games like Resident Evil 8 on good settings and at good frame rates (I recon around 50-60 FPS, and this is because I have an NVIDIA RTX 2060 Max-Q that has 6 GB of video memory - very mid-range in terms of laptop GPUs, imo). Just having the portability of my (kinda) mobile workstation is generally pretty sweet, though it can be problematic if, lets say, you go to the library to study/ do homework, but you end up playing video games on your laptop instead. Personally, this isn't a problem for me since I'm a good, mature young adult boi.

 

If you're still considering the notebook/ desktop route, maybe try looking into 2-in-1's or laptops with touchscreens so you can take notes right on the screen, if you'd like. This feature never really appealed to me, but I've heard people like it. However, if you're considering the gaming laptop route, I would believe that a laptop with a 2070, or really any GPU with 8GB of video memory or more (think the 2070's, 2080's, 3070's, and 3080's) should suite you fine, though also make sure that you're at least getting a 6-core processor and at least 16 GB of memory. I personally believe 32 GB of memory/ ram is a good sweet spot if you want the laptop to last you throughout college, and the 8 GB of video memory should be able to handle most AAA titles at 1080p ultra/ max settings or even 1440p medium high-ish settings at at least 60 FPS or more. 

 

In conclusion, I think at the end of the day, it really depends on your personal preference and what will ultimately fit your needs/ desires. Hope this helps @Mr_freeze

Another tip from your pal Mikey is to see if you can extend your budget just a bit more because if you want to be smart (and this comes from older/ graduate college students), try to buy a laptop that you predict will last you throughout your 4 years of undergraduate, or even if you decide to do a 4+1 program to get your masters (i.e., 5 years of college), 4 years should be a good benchmark for finding a laptop that will fit your needs for college. This is more of a tip that is more financially-based than tech-enthusiast-based (because most likely, most laptops, or really most tech becomes somewhat irrelevant in about 3-4 years), and knowing that college can be a huge financial decision for most people - including me - financial tips, advice, and knowledge can be extremely important, too.

 

But then again, you may not have to worry about this if you're able to survive engineering undergraduate since, well, most engineers get pretty good salaries even right out of college, and if you're able to get paid internships/ part-time work during or between semester/ over the summers, then you can probably save some money there, too.
