Hello all,

Recently, whenever I turn my computer on (from a full shutdown), the computer will open windows boot manager instead of just booting into windows. This first appeared when I used my computer to install a version of Windows Hyper-V Server on a new drive. Prior to the installation, I removed all of my personal drives from my computer so that I would not accidentally overwrite the wrong drive. I then went through the installation process, rebooted to make sure that everything was good, and then removed that drive and put my personal drives back into the computer. Since then, every time that I turn my computer on, it opens windows boot manager and has me select if I want to launch Windows 10 or Hyper-V Server. Selecting Hyper-V just returns an error as the drive is not installed.

I am trying to find a way to skip that step and just automatically boot into Windows as I will not be installing the server drive into my computer again. I attempted to use "Startup repair" in safe mode which did not work and I tried to use "bootrec" but I was denied access to the "bootrec /fixboot" command.

Is there anything else that I can try or at least a workaround to the access denied problem. That is...provided that "bootrec" is the correct way of solving my problem.

Thanks,

Alec

Hello Alec! From my experience, I have not been able to get windows to stop giving me multiple boot options when using multiple versions of windows, or testing other drives. Reinstalling always fixes this. However, you can try reinstalling while keeping files inside Windows, I have not tried it but that sounds like a fair bet! Hope it works, good luck!

The part that confuses me is that I am not using multiple versions of windows. I never even had the server drive plugged in at the same time as my main windows drive.

That seems to be worth attempting. I have seen that there are some ways to get around the bootrec access denied problem so I am also considering starting there.

Yeah I am not sure about the bootrec access that sounds like windows being windows. As for the comment I made on multiple versions of windows, I have used multiple versions or different copies at different times, not the same time, and the issue happened there as well. Which is odd, but I never found a way around it. If you try the resetting, I hope it works!
