Which cherry is better for new mechanical user?

Poinkachu

Hi guys, I usually just use rubber dome since it's what I grew up with and it's cheap as heck, but a friend saying he wants to buy me a mechanical keyboard for my help with something he needed help with awhile ago.
He asked me to pick which cherry switch I want on the keyboard.
I read about cherry switches and watched some videos, but yeah, no way i'm going to get a real feel of it.

Unfortunately there isn't a place where I can test switches here, and no one really selling a test switch without putting like $50 price.
Also unfortunately, in my country I can't return or change what I already bought.

Based on what I gathered, I guess I'm more to either brown, speed silver, or red. As I don't like the loudness of blue one.
And those 4 is the easiest to find on a keyboard based on local market. I don't want to trouble my friend much by requesting rare switches.

If you guys need to know about what I am going to use it for, It's pretty much 50-50 between gaming and typing a tons of stuffs.

I also type in a way that my usual keyboard (rubber dome) just hit the bottom, i don't know what that's called, or how to better explain it.
Let's just say, I don't mash it all the way until the keycap hit the keyboard base, just enough until it register a press (Gawd, who would've thought that trying to explain this is so frustating).
And I usually don't change keyboard until it's totally unusable, like, if it's only minor things, I have the skill to re-solder something on it if needed.

So, I'm hoping you guys can give me some input.
Many thanks in advance.

Addition #1 : Also, I'd like to ask if it's possible to desolder all the switches that comes with a keyboard and install a different type of switch (Same brand)

I went with Cherry MX Browns for my first mech keyboard and I loved it. It's my daily driver keyswitch I use in the office. Satisfying to type on and not loud to those sitting around me.

I use a clicky switch at home where it won't be a nussance.

Check out this Logitech keyboard that has user swappable switches if you want to try others. I'm sure there are other keyboard with this feature but this is the first one that came to mind:

That's always a tough question to answer since everyone is so different. I personally like/use the browns my self. I do a lot of programming/typing so having a bit of feed back for key strokes is a must. With the browns you get the tactile feedback without that super loud click from the blues. I would say browns are probably the best of both worlds between the reds and the blues. Haven't tried silvers though but I would imagine they're the same feel as reds with a completely linear stroke.

You are used to a rubber dome keyboard ... rubber dome have a really small tactile feedback so If you like it then you should get some tactile switches.  The things that will be different from the rubber dome is the mushiness, there won't be any unless you get some silent switches.  That being said cherry brown are quite meh and doesn't have a strong tactile bump, they mostly feel like scratchy linear switches.  I would suggest you get some other brand of brown switches like gateron or kailh.

Also yes you can desolder the switches and solder some other back if you want to put the time an effort to do that.  You also could get a keyboard with hotswappable socket so you would not have to desolder the switches to swap them out.  I don't know what is available in your country but you can check if you can get the gmmk or keychron keyboard (some have the option to come with hotswappable socket).  If you can't get them well check out varmilo, ducky, leopold durgod ... those are soldered but they have usually better offering than what gaming brand have to offers like better build quality, better keycaps, lower price specially compared to "high" end gaming keyboard.

2 of the brands you mentioned exist in my local marketplace, keychron, ducky.

Keychron only sell the TKL version, which unfortunately, I prefer non TKL for various work reasons.
Ducky ones here costs almost the same like corsair's high end keyboard but without local distributor if I happen to want to claim warranty. Retail store warranty here suck so bad.

I tried reds first and have stuck with them since, grey/"mxspeed" is just like red but better too.

My current corsair OPX's type just like mxspeeds

I suggest going straight for mxspeed or reds and just getting used to it by using it.

Edit: Just remember you'll probably typo a lot more in the beginning until you become used to it.
