I have a new computer with the following specs:

MSI Tomahawk B550

AMD 5900x

Samsung evo pro 980 1tb

G.Skill 32GB DDR4 PC4-28800 3600MHz

Nvidia 3070 FE

corsair 750w power supply

I've run into an issues where, seemly randomly, 1-2 times a week the SSD stops working, The computer blue screens

reboots, and lands in the BIOS where no SSD is present.

The solution is to completely power down the computer, flipping the switch on the PSU, and then powering it back on, where the SSD shows back up and boots normally.

There are, no system logs nor memory dumps, probably because there is nothing to write to when the crash happens.

I've made sure all firmware, software, and bios versions are up to date, I've even tested a different CPU, and GPU in the rig with no changes. The problem is not causable, it happens seemingly randomly at random times of day, when the computer is or isn't in use. Thankfully I haven't had any data loss or a corrupted system yet but if this keeps happening it's just a matter of time.

So the question, is this a motherboard or SSD issues or something else?

Thanks for any help.

Does the error still occur with the CMOS Cleared...?

Have you tried reseating the RAM & m.2 drive?

Can I realistically call myself a gamer, if I only play ONE, twenty year old game...?

Did you test boot it, before you built in into the case?

WHY NOT...?!

Yes, I cleared the CMOS after the first couple occurrences. And it continued to happen afterwards.

Is there anything life threateningly precious on the m.2 drive?

Is there is, move it off the drive & see if a Windows re-install will help to remedy any issues?

Thank you for your reply, I re-installed windows over the weekend. Things ran normally for about 36 hours until the same crash happened again. I don't think it surprised me. I realized since the BIOS can't see the drive after a reboot it's really not likely the OS's fault.

I think the question is, do I RMA the motherboard or the SSD first.

Do you have access to another SSD to see if an install of Windows, with that same motherboard give the same issues?

It never hurts to have a known working drive of some description on hand for just such occasions.

If that's stable, with a cleared CMOS, then I'd say the 'board is hosed/needs an RMA.

Unfortunately I don't have any other m.2 nvme drives, let alone pci gen 4 drives. 😞 Maybe I'll just buy a small one and see if it has the same problem then return it.

Any m.2 device you can install Windows to will do the job; doesn't have to be NVMe or Gen.4.
