OK so currently i have an ocz 750W power supply and lately it started making obnoxious coil wine its the loudest thing in my computer at the moment.

the current draw im pulling is about 500W but im planing to upgrade my graphics card so that will bump the wattage up to 700w.

im looking for a new psu that is quiet modular and over 800w from:

http://www.umart.com.au/umart1/ (its a local store no shipping yay)

im currently looking at the:

corsair RM-850 for 219$AUD

SilverStone ST1000-G-EVO for 219$AUD

my maximum price for a new psu is 250$AUD

and yeh i don't have the money to spend more than my budget for another two weeks :(

overkill is the point i want silent

Well, going overkill doesn't necessary mean you will yield a quieter PSU. A larger wattage unit will generate more heat at full load than a lower wattage unit, so in order to cool effectively cool it, it may need to accommodate a more powerful fan which would end up being louder. Interestingly enough, I recall someone complaining their Seasonic X 1250 being louder than his previous ~600w unit.

i hope 850w is low enough so i would be in the crappy efficiency zone should be pulling 700w after the new Gcard in a few weeks

I don't know how they change the fan profile of the RM750/850, but the way they had the RM850, the fan doesn't turn on until ~70% load showing that the unit is thermal base rather than load base.

Anyways, I'm aware of how quiet the RM series can be. I made a general statement that getting a higher wattage unit may not necessary yield a more quiet operation.

Unless you throw it in a hot box (even then the fan only spin up for 2 minutes), the 550w and the 1000w both had the fan turned on at 500wDC.

Between the RM850 and Strider Gold Evolution 1000w, the RM850 would certainly be quieter due to semi-passive design, where the 1000w unit is an actively cool unit. Personally, I would go with the Silverstone unit, as it still uses a quiet FDB fan, offer a higher output, and uses better caps (or the 850w unit if you get it for cheaper).

Was this sarcasm? o.0

It wouldn't be "crappy", as it is more of a difference of ~<1%.

What are you upgrading to that you figure it going to be pulling from 500w to 700w, btw?
