Hi, I recently got an old Xeon X3440 which runs @3.8ghz with temps of about 84°C while doing one cb15 run. I know for sure that it can hit 4ghz easily.

For them extra fps I'd like to delid and repaste the die with normal thermal paste and not liquid metal since I'm afraid it's gonna damage anything in the long run
So I'd like to know if anyone has experience with thermal paste between the die and IHS and by how much It's gonna drop the temps.

 

btw my cooler is nothing special, I'm about to get a Freezer 34 to replace the old one.

Typically the paste under Intel IHS plates is very poor in thermal transfer.

 

Lynnfield chips are not soldered, so you only need to cut the glue and the plate comes off. Just have to be careful not to cut into the green board.

 

You may very well see a 10c drop in temps depending on where you take measurements from, generally at load is ideal.

 

A lot of Intel processors have been delidded in the past for poor thermals. I suggest watching a video or two before the proceedure so you have a feel for it before actually doing the delid.

So far, I had a dude at my local computer shop do two delids and I am somewhat happy with the results. I replaced the IHS with copper and used liquid metal. It dropped my temps by 10~15 degrees. In my opinion, it was very worth it acoustically. However, I was not able to get a lower vcore or a better overclock out of it.
