Trying to install Win 10 on a new build, however I'm only getting a black screen when trying to boot from the Win10 USB stick.

Mobo: MSI MPG B550 GAMING PLUS

CPU: AMD Athlon 200GE

RAM: Corsair Value Select DDR4 2400MHz 8GB

I've tried re-seating both the CPU and the RAM.

I've also tried boot sticks for Ubuntu and HiveOS, both with the same result as the Win10.

Flashed the BIOS to the latest version with the same result.

The mobo is also not detecting the m.2: Kingston A2000 250GB NVMe

This makes me think maybe the mobo is to blame?
I'm not fmailiar with MSI mobos. Could there be some setting I'm missing?

Gratefull for any help.

Cheers!

Maybe your SSD is set up as an MBR drive, and because of that, your UEFI BIOS might not like it.

So change your BIOS from UEFI to Legacy, and it might work. Or, put in the SSD in another PC, format it and make it GPT, try reinstall Windows again.

Hi @BetteBalterZen

Putting BIOS to CSM did not help detecting the SSD.

I've tried putting the SSD in my main computer, and it detects it fine. I've formatted it to NTFS.

CMS did put some fancy red lines in the corners of my screen when trying to boot the Win10 USB stick tho - Progress! 😛

To make better guesses to what could fix this, please check what partition your NVME uses in your other PC, it it's MBR og GPT. It's important to know. Because MBR drives will not work in a UEFI BIOS. Could make the drive not show up.

Also, I can see your motherboard have two M.2 slots - have you tried both?

Couple of thoughts:

If your NVME is MBR, you have to use Legacy BIOS, and if your NVME is GPT, you have to use UEFI.
And also, if your Windows 10 installations USB is setup as MBR, fx when creating it with Rufus, you have to use Legacy, and if it is set up as GPT, then UEFI.

So there could be a little complication of problems - lets say your NVME is MBR, so you set up your BIOS as Legacy, but then the Windows 10 installations is setup as GPT, then the installation still won't work, and vice versa. Therefore it is important to know how everything is set up 🙂

Also, if the Windows 10 installation is set up as GPT, and you use UEFI, you might have to disable Secure Boot to be able to boot on the USB. Secure Boot can then be enabled again after installation of Windows, if needed.

@BetteBalterZen

Thanks for your feedback! I can absolutely see how that might be a major issue.

I've tried both m.2 slots - same result.

I've got the m.2 in my main computer now. Am I blind or does Disk Manager not tell you if the drive is MBR or GPT?

I've now tried connecting three different SATA drives.

None show up in BIOS. All slots shows as "Not Present".

Could the mobo be busted?

Yeah unfortunately does sound like it's the motherboard... Try reset CMOS

They were pretty certain the mobo was busted and asked me to return it.
