So here's my problem.

my usb speeds are insanely slow, both usb 2.0 & 3.0

USB 2.0 transfers files at about 3mb/s.

USB 3.0 Does it at about 15-20mb/s but will often fail. (corsair usb 3.0 32gb stick does loads better on other pc's)

I have a 250GB Samsung evo SSD  &  a 3TB Seagate HDD.

when i transferred all on data back onto my 3TB HDD speeds were good 150mb/s from another HDD through USB 3.

they are still good when using a hdd but if i put a memory stick in drops to 3mb/s.

It doesnt matter if the files on the hdd or ssd, speeds are only good when transferring to a HDD.

I don't use my usb's too often so its not a major problem. if there any more info you need let me know. il happily upload pictures if you need any.

I have two theories:

Bios needs an update ( have used windows system manager to make sure the drivers are up to date)

Or The ssd hasn't got trim or another feature enabled ( this is my first ssd)

Here's my build:

  • CPU
    Intel i7 4770K
  • Motherboard
    Asus mini itx z87-pro
  • RAM
    8gb
  • GPU
    AMD R9 290
  • Case
    Bitfenix Prodigy
  • Storage
    250gb ssd(os) 3TB Hdd
  • PSU
    760 corsair platinum
  • Display(s)
    standard HDTV
  • Cooling
    H100i
  • OS: Windows 8.1
Thanks for any help.

USB-speed can vary a lot depending on a lot of things, so don't assume something is wrong right of the bat.

I'm not sure though since your story is a bit vague, what did you exactly transfer and over what medium :S ?

Few things to take in mind nevertheless:

First of all, you were comparing hdd transfer rates over usb  with just transferring to a usb-stick. Although I don't know the technical explanation behind it, it is normal that usb transfers files way more quickly to external hard drives than to normal flash drives like a usb stick.

Second of all, it depends on the number of files it has to transfer. 5 big files with a faster rate than 500 small files (even if it's the same size)

On the other hand, you might have broken a usb port somehow, have you tried using other usb ports?

Thanks for the reply,

Well on my laptop a Usb 2.0 stick does speeds of up to 24mb/s (haven't tried it on usb 3 yet but i would assume speeds would be greater than that)

all the speeds would be based on transferring a file like a movie or music.

speeds aren't affected by large or small files, or how many files there are.

Its on all 4 usb 2.0 and all 8 usb 3.0.

i have tried multiple flash sticks which all achieve higher speeds on my laptop.

i used windows to copy and paste files. don't know of any other way of testing it.

all i know really is that high speeds have only been achieved when using an external hdd to transfer to an internal hdd.

internal hdd to flash stick & ssd to flash stick both come up with the 3mb/s speed

hope this info gives more insight

if not just ask

Internal Hdd to internal ssd gives speed of about 150mb/s

copying a 1gb file off of a usb 2 flash stick to the internal ssd gives about 20mb/s where as writing to the flash stick gives 3-4mb/s ( all done on usb 3& 2 ports and on front IO)

i dont know how else to test or how to give more info

So i figured i needed to do some testing.

i used a 4.3GB mkv file for this testing, copying and pasting on file explorer.

If i used a smaller file my speeds on my laptop would have been more consistent and faster (1gb file constant 24mb/s speed usb 2.0&3.0)

Let me know if there is a better way to test.

Also i am sure that the 120mb/s speed on the laptop is a flaw as it only went for a second or two.

HDD & SSD are internal sata 6, usb is flash stick.

I dont have a usb 3.0 on my laptop unfortunately.

my laptop is a toshiba satellite 2.5GHz I3 , Hdd 750GB.

I want my write speeds to improve on my pc as im sure 4.50MB/s is way too low.

Thanks for any help,

Very sorry for editing so many times, things messed up.

You seem to have a newer board so this may not apply but if you have a fter market usb 3.0 controller it likely has something to do with the driver.

using system manager says they are up to date, would you advise uninstalling then re-installing drivers from asus web (not disk)?

That depends what USB 3.0 controllers you have really where you should get the drivers. And what is "system manager"? If its something in windows it really has not idea if its truly up to date unless there is something newer on windows update.

Sorry meant device manager. well i tried some newer drivers but they made no difference and the rolled back to even older drivers still no difference. so im stumped. i might try a new hdd with a new os 7 see if that makes it work.

This is why I asked what USB 3.0 controller(s) you have. Once I know I can link you to the most updated drivers for them.

Heres What it says, hope this helps.

ok it is asmedia which is the one I have had more problems than any with. Grab this driver http://goo.gl/4YVPOy its hosted on my server and is a clean one compared to many you get from OEMs like ASUS. I got it from Highpoint as I have a couple of their high end USB 3.0 cards. Let me know how it goes.

Ok so the intel driver depends if your running win 7 or 8. 7 has a standalone driver 8is built into intel's chipset driver.

So My chipset is holding me back or broke? its only on flash storage though :S

I have an Asus B75 motherboard, and even though USB 3.0 worked, the speed was really slow, until I installed the USB suit from Asus and since then I get much better transfers.

Does it work with non usb 3.0 devices? my usb 2 stick wont show up

The suit manages the ports, no matter what device it is.

You can give it a try, if it doesn't help then just uninstall it.

no its not I just need to know what OD you run to suggest you the correct driver

then you may have bigger issues so try installing the intel chipset driver http://goo.gl/gD9Vwo

I run Windows 8.1 64bit. I did auto scan on the site and it said my chipset was valid but hd graphics were out (dont use that anyways)
