there is DDR3 and DDR5 but what happened to DDR4?

Kind of a dumb question but it could prove to be interesting

*GDDR5 is a modified version of DDR3 that provides much higher bandwidth but with much more latency.  Since GPU processing is highly parallel this benefits them, but CPUs do not benefit much from such high bandwidth so we use regular DDR3 for them for the lower latency.  The reason it is called GDDR5 is because there were two GDDR generations based on DDR2 and another two based on DDR3, it hasn't just been one for one.

I havnt really heard of DDR4 in any situation. Ive only really been so much into tech that I would know what DDR number ram is on.

I suppose we will get DDR4 RAM once its common for DDR3 to just natively be faster than 2000Mhz. I suppose that means Haswell might support DDR4???

Did video cards ever use DDR4 memory? I havnt heard of it before.

well now i feel stupid i figured it was just a fancy name because it had advanced didnt know there was an actual diffrence

DDR4 spec was only announced last September, Expected for adoption in late 2013/Early 2014. It's quite simply an evolutionary step to DDR3 which we are currently using for system memory.

It's quite common for people to mix them up,

GDDR5 is basically Video card memory. Very high latency but able of huge bandwidth so it's ideal for GPU's to utilize.

But the PS4 will use GDDR5 for its system RAM??? Isnt that how Sony is doing things? ¯\(°_o)/¯

They are using GDDR5 as shared ram between the CPU and GPU. Traditionally it's GDDR5 is only used on the GPU.

It's basically modified DDR3 but is not the same thing as what DDR5 will be when it eventually comes to market.

Since they are using an APU, their CPU and GPU are combined and so they have to both use DDR3 or both use GDDR5.  They chose GDDR5 which I think is the better choice, since the graphics is probably the more important thing to give a boost to.  Don't be fooled though, their CPU will suffer a little bit for it.

There is no need for DDR4 since CPU market have been stagnating lately. In most games you won't notice the difference between 1600MHz and 2400MHz.

The lower voltage and new topology, in addition to higher density while maintaining a relatively inexpensive price is a welcome addition. Plus it's still common to see DDR3 1333 or even 1066 still... DDR4 will eliminate that alltogether, of course. I hear what you're saying, though, you state a fair point.

DDR4 is expected to be on the market late 2013

In what form though? Will they be releasing an entire new platform just for ddr4 that I haven't heard of?

Everything I've read on it is pretty vague about it. I would say servers would get it before desktops, tends to be how these things go.

I remember reading somewhere that it's possible that it could be making an appearance in laptops first as well

I don't see DDR4 as being necessary yet. If CPUs keep going at this snail pace, all you'll achieve with DDR4 is worse latency and a theoretical bandwith that no current CPU will use. In effect, gimping yourself. Of course, DDR4 might be the push CPU makers need. I'm no expert on the finer inter-technical harmony of computer technology researchers. They could all be sharing their knowledge and pushing together, or they could be a bunch of bickering babies in each corner of the world not really paying attention to the others.

In case the moderators do not ban me as requested, this is a notice that I have left and am not coming back.
