CCTV with Poor Broadband

Hi guys,

 

I'm currently renovating my house in a fairly rural part of Scotland with only a 12Mbit broadband connection to work with and I would like to install a few cameras for security but I would rather not have data being continuously sent across my internet connection hogging valuable bandwidth. 

 

I would like to the ability to connect remotely using a phone or tablet.

 

Any ideas or suggestions would be welcome.

 

I already have a rubust Cat6 wired network reaching all parts of the house and a home server which currently serves my files, PLEX and Lancache.

CCTV is directly hardwired (Im not an expert but I have installed my own home security CCTV system) and the only time mine uses the internet is if I want to access the live feed.  Or if I query previous recordings on the hard drive over the network. 

 

If you plan on running with ethernet, I highly advise using PoE (power over ethernet) camera system, and have a PoE router, or PoE injectors so you dont have to run as many power lines.

Hi buddy, thanks for the info.

 

I wasn't sure how remote feeds works and if the NVR continuously sent data or it was an 'on-demand' thing.

Deleted - I typed this up then read it, retyped it and realized you already understand lol (and I was going down the wrong rabbit hole of info)

 

Unless you are on a cloud based recording service, only bandwidth as I understand it will be routed through your router to the recording box until you query the recorder over the internet

If you are hooking up a CCTV security system, this will use coax and power splitters that run along the coax line (from my experience) and will not affect your network unless you query the DVR.

Hi buddy, its not my internal network bandwidth I'm worried about. Its a constant stream being sent outside of my network that I don't want.

 

I use a Hikvision system at my work and have that connected to Hikconnect which I can connect to with a phone to view remotely. It works great but I think the Hikvision NVR send a constant stream tot the Hikconnect servers.

 

While I do want to be able to remotely view I would don't want a constant stream of data being sent outside my network hogging valuable internet bandwidth

Ahhhh, Im a shadetree security system/network guy.  I went CCTV for this reason (so no outside streaming to a service) and connect directly to my box connected to my home network (from phone, or PC) as long as I have the two devices linked (which I like, I have to physically have access to my box, and its QR code, to link a device to be able to query it for network viewing)

Yeh, that's kinda what I'm after. I know my upstream bandwidth sucks but if its only gonna get used when I'm connected on a phone or other remote client then I'm happy with that.

 

Any suggestions on a cheap or free backend for this that's compatible with any camera??

My only experience is with what came with my system - I use AVSS - its "okay" as software goes, just have to get used to waiting to cache data alot (if you switch days, etc).  Sometimes it crashes for no reason.
