PC upgrades needs a look over

Go to solution Solved by Megazero,

Upgrading from

GeForce GTX 460 v2

Intel Core i3-2120

So after telling me not to upgrade to the 4440, could you tell me what I should upgrade to? :y

Nothing too expensive please. :P

Also, I don't really want to overclock my CPU, so what's the cooler for? *I should have specified*

For CPU, if you absolutely sure you are not going to OC, go with a i5 4670, which cost 234 CAD, and go with a cheaper Mobo. Stock cooler with the case and the CPU should already be enough for a non-OC CPU, but you could always add in a cheap but good AIO water cooler like CM Seidon 120V or a normal fan like the CM Hyper 212 EVO

And should I assume that you already have a good enough SSD and HDD? Are you going to reuse them?

For GPU I really think you should go with the 770, the 660 is good it worth upgrading it to the 770

CPU:  Intel Core i5-4670 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor  ($234.00 @ Canada Computers)
Motherboard:  ASRock Z87 Extreme3 ATX LGA1150 Motherboard  ($119.99 @ NCIX)
Video Card:  EVGA GeForce GTX 770 2GB Video Card  ($399.00 @ Canada Computers)
Optical Drive:  Samsung SH-224DB/BEBE DVD/CD Writer  ($16.79 @ DirectCanada)
Total: $866.78
(Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available.)

You can actually choose a much cheaper Mobo (Like this one http://ca.pcpartpicker.com/part/gigabyte-motherboard-gah81d3 ) since the one I choose is also overclock-able, it just that I dont really feel good choosing a Mobo <100$ and the Z87 is capable of SLI and have more 6GB/s SATA gate, so... but really if you dont see the benefit from that (It's unlikely that you are going to SLI anyway) just go with the cheaper Mobo

Budget: $700-780 CAD

Aim: To run games at mid-very high settings, video edit and
render, record at 30fps while gaming with those high settings

Why I'm upgrading: My current build has an older mobo and
doesn't fully support my SSD, so if I'm upgrading my mobo,
it's a good reason for me to completely upgrade everything else
so I can game better and harder.

Case: Fractal Design Define R4

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H81-D3                                 <Megazero>
CPU: Intel Core i5-4670                                                      <Megazero>
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 770 2GB                                   <Megazero>
RAM: 8GB G.Skill DDR3 (From current build)

Power Supply: XFX PRO450W (From current build)

CURRENT PRICE -  IS A BIT TOO MUCH - $809 Help me lower the price please!

Everything but the things labeled " (From current build) " will be bought as soon
as I make enough money to purchase them.

This is technically my first build, my current one was built by my older brother,
which I later upgraded with an SSD and such, but this one will almost completely
replace his work, so I'd like it to be functional.

--

This PC is primarily for Gaming, but I will also be doing video editing, photoshopping, rendering and browsing, so nothing over-kill.

--

Anything against the parts? Tell me why and give me some replacements.

--
This build is looking pretty good for me at the moment, if you'd like to see my current PC part picker thing I've provided the link
[x]

Thanks to Megazero and others, but I'm still looking for either a cheaper mobo or cheaper anything.

Still looking for cheaper alternatives, but the Fractal Design Define R4 is the case, no talk about it.

What would the White Bitfenix Comrade look like with an Optical Drive?

I'm confused. What are you upgrading from? Don't upgrade to a 4440.

Thank you so much, but in the future, I might look into SLI if one 770 isn't enough.

Do you also know any cooler for CPU that doesn't have a large radiator or fan but just something to replace stock at a cheap price?

I also already have an SSD and HDD for the build, so I don't plan on buying anything else until my current ones are full.

So for those who have checked PCpartPicker, you'll know that I have 4 fans to go with the R4's 2 PMW ones
B53rHl9.png

Ignore one of the 2 top fans, as the one closer to the front isn't going to be added.

I know this is complete overkill, but could anybody suggest a better layout or amount of fans?

You dont really need to fill out all the fan slot. My case have 3 and I only use 1 myself, and about to add 1 watercooler in 1 slot just because I'm upgrading the CPU.

For a good fan I think all will agree that the Hyper 212 EVO is a good and cheap enough fan, you may take a look.

For the layout, if it's me I would actually put the 2 fan in the middle of the case to the front, or 1 to the front and 1 middle, I wouldnt really put one on the bottom like that.

What do people thing of the White Antec P280? It's slightly cheaper than the R4, probably lower quality, but it has room for cable management.

Or the White BitFenix Comrade, but it doesn't seem to have any room for cable management.

Or even the Black Pearl R4 *sigh* not white however.

The things with the case is that it doesnt really matter and dont contributed much, so usually people just choose it base on the color scheme or design. Ofc the minimum needed has to be fullfil like ATX or Mini ATX or will it fit the PSU (I have to change to my current case because of that), since you dont run extra fans basically any mid-tower case is ok for you, just choose one that's cheap, have the design you want, and have enough place for fans if you ever going to add in more.

1 problem though, most of the case is Black, because normally people like it black, so the one with different color is usually have higher price so... I cant really help you with this one

Yes I was looking for a white case, and yes there are very little, but the reason I don't really want to the Fractal Design Define R4 because of it's size. I'd be perfectly fine with it, yes, but the physical size of it matters because my desk space is very limited, and the case *just* fits my desk. I'll update my Case needs because I agree with you that white cases aren't that common, so I'll look for a black one.

Maybe try lower the price by not going for such an expensive mobo? You could like go for some 130-150 mobo, maybe micro-atx? Also instead of the 4670 on your list you could go 4570? Or even 3570, not like ivy is that much slower then haswell but some stores give ridiculous discounts on ivy ;)

What do you think of the ASRock H81M? It's a really cheap mobo in price, is it cheap physically?

And I'll look into the CPU prices :)

edit: Looked at the CPUs you recommended, but I couldn't really find them any cheaper than the 4670. :[

I don't think you should cheap out too much on mobo, it's important and too bad 3000 series arent on disscount where you live. But isnt a 4570 still cheaper then a 4670? I'm buying a 4570 for someone on wendsday and it was lik 30 euros cheaper then 4670...
