Hello everyone,

so I started having some trouble a while back when I installed a new Nvidia driver my computer started to get heavy FPS drop randomly out of no where so I tried DDU and Nvidia driver uninstaller and the problem continued. The problem is that I will be running about 200 FPS and then drop down to 30-60 and stutter and for a couple of seconds and then return to the 200. This only happens after I game for a few hours it doesn’t happen when I first turn my pc on. also reset my windows and did a clean install of it onto my Pc. This not resolving the problem. So I then started moving onto my components. I replaced my RAM and returned my GPU for a new one one. This did not improve my problem. I am not really sure what to do now or what to check at the time. I did notice when the FPS drop did occur on EVGA precision it showed the GPU clock and GPU memory clock drop down but this GPU is brand new and I sent the last one back because I thought that it was the problem. My temp for my GPU sometimes hits 80C max when playing more demanding games and my temp for my CPU usually sits around 35C. still learning and improving my pc skills and I’m kind of lost here so help would be appreciated. My computer is only about a year and a half old.

The problem is that I will be running about 200 FPS and then drop down to 30-60 and stutter and for a couple of seconds and then return to the 200.

motherboard: asus rog Maximus Xi hero

Cpu: i9-9900k

GPU: RTX 2080 super

Ram: 32GB DDR4 3200

power supply: 750w bronze

Can you run it on a heavy load with GPU-Z running? Once you have GPU-Z running, switch over to the Sensors tab and take note of the PerfCap Reason field. Is there anything listed when it drops?

Not too familiar with GPU-Z I’ll check it out and see

The Dram-less version ?  If so that is your issue.

Not 100% sure if it is or not but here it is on Amazon. Inland Professional 1TB SSD 3D NAND SATA III 6Gb/s 2.5" 7mm Internal Solid State Drive (1T) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07FM9SSP6/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_5E7FHD4A1E2SWYTQ0XFP

It's DRAM-less, with horrible reviews. This could feasibly be your problem if the drive can't keep up.

It's kind of generic to be honest..

Sweet I’ll try to find me a better SSD and not be cheap and try to save a couple bucks this next time around. What exactly does dram less mean?

The drive you bought is apparently a MicroCenter rebranded drive, which they just took from another manufacturer and slapped a new logo on, some people reported their drives having a DRAM cache, while others reported no DRAM cache. I tried looking up specific part numbers but no avail, without the drive in front of me and taken apart, I wouldn't be able to tell if it does or does not have a DRAM cache.

EDIT: If you're feeling confident enough, you can take the housing off the drive and check it out yourself to see if it has the DRAM chip or not.

Also, if I may.. I'd recommend buying a Samsung 870 Evo or even a Crucial MX500, both have DRAM caches, exceptional speed, and both from reputable brands. Best part, the 1TB of either is about as much as you paid for your drive, with the Crucial being even cheaper.

Yeah I was definitely looking at getting a 870 evo. I did get this one from microcenter. I think in the next few days I’ll get the Samsung and give it a go to see if my problem is fixed and I’ll let you guys know

I have a 860 as my "mass storage" and an NVME as my system drive. I have zero complaints thus far with the 860, so I'd imagine you'd be happy. What I'm wondering is if that was the issue or not. Let us know.

Been testing my computer the last couple days haven’t had any FPS stutter since getting the Samsung evo 870. Thanks for the recommendations boys. Nice work!
