Hello, I am hoping someone can help me. I cannot get this figured out and wouldn't surprise me if its something simple.

I recently built a computer as a HTPC in my living room for media and light to moderate gaming.

Ryzen 5 3600, ASUS B450-F Gaming, Gigabyte GTX 1660 Super, Win 10 Pro

The problem is, according to Speedtest, I am only getting a 1/4 of the speed I should. Also my pings are 100-150ms when they should be 30-40. I have my main computer, a media computer running plex and an Unraid server that's mostly for storage. All of them are getting max speed and fast pings.

Things I tried:

  • I wiped everything and did a fresh install of Win 10 (not that big of a deal since there really wasn't anything on it). Ran a speedtest immediately after install (basic drivers) and after loading the ASUS drivers. Same result both times.
  • Booted to Safe mode w/ network and same result
  • Ran a cable to the router hooked to the modem bypassing the living room switch. I have not run a direct line to modem because I'd have to go through walls to the basement. But Netgear has a the ability to run a speedtest on the router which also tested fine as do all my other devices.
  • I searched for running processes that could effect QoS/limit bandwidth and didn't find any I recognized, but then there are a lot of services I don't know what they do. Again, fresh install of Windows with only ASUS drivers loaded so shouldn't be any 3rd party software issues unless it is from ASUS.
  • I checked the router to make sure QoS was not enabled and nothing was blocking the HTPC by it's IP or MAC.

From all this I am guessing it is some setting in Windows, a service I don't recognize, possibly a bad ethernet jack (though its properties say its connected at 1Gb), or something I am not thinking of. Since they're cheap I did order a new NIC and I will run a cable this weekend to direct connect to modem, but if neither of those two are it, I am at a loss. Or even if the direct connect does work, what would be wrong since all the other machines don't have an issue.

Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Run a LiveUSB install of Linux Mint (it's very windows-like)

Do a speedtest. If you get the same results, then it's hardware (either in the PC or the wiring)

If you don't, then it's something in Windows being stupid.

Ok I ran Mint and yep same result. I did not download or run any drivers (since I've never used Linux before) so I don't know if that would impact it. So it has to be the hardware? I don't think its the cable because I used a completely different cable when I ran it directly to the router by-passing the living room switch and got the same result. The new NIC I ordered is supposed to be here tomorrow so I'm guessing there's nothing to do except wait and try that correct?

Thanks again, I didn't think of trying Linux to eliminate Windows issue possibility.

I did the Linux install and same issue. I just installed the new NIC and same issue when connected to the living room switch but when I direct wired it to the router I got expected speeds. So a combo of new NIC and direct wiring did it. This leads to my next question... how do I test the wires and/or switch to figure out what exactly is the problem? I can't leave a loose wire running through my living room to my office.

Thanks

switch is easy, buy a new one, they are cheap.

Testing wiring needs some training and a whole lotta cash, the network testing equipment I have used is between 5 and 6 figures in price.

O, I was afraid of that. I will try the switch and if that doesn't work its probably cheaper to just replace the wire if I can pull it through the walls using the existing wire. Thanks.

Sure, keep us informed about what you find out
