Hi all, im new here, just a quick question, I currently run a Core I9 10900X on a gigabyte X299 UD4 board. I bought the I9 last year to replace the I5 7640X. along with the cpu last year i purchased an RX5700 ro replace my RX580 and i put a new PSU in with the card and i have upgraded from 16gb to 32gb ddr4 ram, also i replaced my 1tb crucial ssd with a 2tb Intel 660P M.2. lastly i put everything into a new Nzxt h5110 elite.

My issue is i've been thinking, should i have migrated to a different processor chipset instead of buying the upgrade, I don't and probably won't use the 256gb ram availability anytime soon and since my AIO pump sounds like it's about to go im worried about having a cpu that runs so hot,  my use case is mostly gaming, a small amount of music production and artwork. would i be better selling the cpu/mobo and if so what do you guys recommend?

all the commentary about intel and their lineup lately has really got me thinking (and slightly regretting my choice)

thanks

Do you have anything else that is utilizing the extra PCIe lanes from the processor? It was bad choice to be upgrading on the X299 platform imho, unless you enjoy overclocking/tinkering around. I got my 10980XE on a NH-D15 (18C/38T) and it keeps temps reasonable and I'm happy with the performance. You were better off going for a i9-10850K and Z490 at the time last year when you upgraded.

Intel is in the shitters right now with their current lineup. Their i5-11600k is really the only worthy processor if your just gaming nowadays (from Intel), although 10th gen is just better overall with more cores on the highest end chip and price. I would say around $700-800 for the CPU and motherboard, although getting any buyers will be slim- so I would just keep this rig and upgrade the case and AIO to something like a 360mm AIO (I can't recommend any as I don't have a lot of knowledge with them, but have read when googling around so) or custom water cooling.

Is there something the i9-10900X not giving you when it comes to gaming??? What are the rest of your specifications like?

thanks for the reply!

yeah you're right in hindsight upgrading was a bad idea just the cpu i had at the time became a bottle neck and i didn't want to get rid of the motherboard because it was only 2 years old and still worked fine and at the time was the most expensive component in the system but now i see my systems running way hotter than it needs to be for games and i'm missing out on 4th gen PCI. im not however concerned about DDR5 ( my friend still has his devils canyon I7 and is staying put until DDR5 comes out, he's spent the money on a valve index and extra memory instead.)

the catch 22 i have is if im to sell i need to have a replacement lined up ready to go,but as you say if getting a buyer is slim then to none then whats the point,

As for the case i won't be upgrading, what i have is fairly new. but i'll probably get that  arctic liquid freezer 240 i was looking at. as for games the cpu is fine, it's mostly modern warfare,  modded minecraft and Rts (C&C, homeworld, AOE, RON etc) so the cpu can handle it fine, just that my system is running so hot and using way moire power than i feel i need. anyway just in case my full spec is:

Core I9 10900X

Gigabyte X299 UD4

32Gb Crucial Balistix 3200Mhz ddr4 in quad channel

Asus raedon 5700 8GB

2TB intel 660p m.2

Seasonic Focus GX  850W psu

cooling is an Akasa venom A20 water cooler with Akasa piranha fans for the case and the radiator

Nzxt H5110 case

You could get more performance out of newer / different hardware. But in most cases, its probably not needed. Would jumping from 120 to 150 fps effect your gaming experience? Also, PCI-E gen 4 is really only beneficial for storage currently. It's always nice to look at all the graphs with the latest and greatest, but the question is more whether its enough for what you're doing.

I run a 10980xe. But the gaming I do is minimal and I am rarely running triple A titles. Switching to an AMD 5950x would give better performance, but not $1700 worth of extra performance (motherboard and CPU rough estimate in AUD).

I would focus on getting a good cooling solution in place and use the current hardware until it no longer meets your needs. X299 systems run hot. I have a 280mm AIO (Corsair 115i Platinum) and it still runs quite toasty under heavy load. Considering the jump to a 360mm AIO down the line.

If you want better gaming performance, your best bet is to join the queue for a GPU. A RTX 3080 would give you more of a bump than a change in CPU will.
