Hey

I was hoping that someone could help me as I don't have any experience with a nas device.

I am in the process of digitising my familys old home videos and need to look at long term storage.

I'm thinkimg a nas with raid 1 would be best so that I can swap out x1 hard drive at a time to keep all the videos safe.

I was also thinking of either having x2 nas in different houses incase of fire/ theft etc or having x1 nas device and saving the media on M disks and store them elsewhere.

What are your thoughts on this or is there something better?

With the nas I would want a 2 Bay one that is capable of streaming the videos (they are all old vhs so nothing high res lol) I would also want everyone to be able to access it remotely with a username/ password.

I've seen the WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra. Would that be good enough or do I need to look for something with a better cpu and more ram?

I'm in the UK as well, if that's makes a difference for suggestions.

Thanks for the help in advance as well

Chris

Opening up your NAS to the internet is just not a good idea. QNAP (just this week), Synology, and all the other players have had real issues with NASes being compromised while connected to the internet. You could do a couple of things to give your family access. You could use something like Vimeo where they'd just use a password to access the video. Or if self-hosting is your thing, you could run MediaCMS. I use that to host a lot of nonsense game streaming clips (https://den.wtf if you want to see what it looks like). It supports making everything private except for logged in users.

As far as the NAS goes, what's your budget? They certainly vary wildly in price, so that would go a long way to getting you some recommendations.

I havnt got a budget set as would all be chipping in and paying for it. I would say around 200 ish (not Inc the hard drives) but I have no idea if thats a high enough budget for one

I will have a look at YouTube and Vimeo. Although I probably wouldn't go the YouTube route as I would rather it involed some use of username or password lol.
