RAID protects hard drive failure, but what if my system dies before my drives do? From my understanding, creating a new raid array will wipe everything. Or if I were to move the drives to a new system, will I need to create a new raid array as well?

Depends on what created the RAID. If it's mobo RAID, you can sometimes get away with moving to a board with the same mobo software RAID solution.

It will be motherboard RAID solution.

Yes, but which one? And are you moving to a similar platform?

Oh, sorry to not give complete answers.

My current motherboard is MSI B550 Tomahawk; I am currently not changing system. But my system go through a full hardware update about every 2 year, I want to know if I should use my main PC to do the RAID or a dedicated machine. I do not know if my next upgrade will consist of MSI motherboard, or AMD for that matter. Therefore, the worst case scenario is being considered.

My reason to stray away from a dedicated machine is cost; I would need to purchase a NAS box or another PC.

The main purpose of the RAID is to act as a long term storage for projects, and family stuff. So I would like to have a permanent-ish storage, I currently back up these files to an external harddrive and cloud storage. Though, it is trouble some to reach these files -my projects- from day to day basis.

I plan to have my RAID as primary long-term storage, and backup to cloud/external drive every week.

I would not use the motherboard RAID. AMD's RAIDXpert 2 is particularly a mess.

Assuming you are not trying to RAID your OS drives and are RAID a separate set of data drives, use Windows Storage Spaces.
