what a terrible time for a gpu to die....

3 options:

1) use integrated/cheap gpu which is not powerful but can be used until shortage ends
2) Buy a prebuilt

3) Spend 2-3x MSRP on a graphics card

I would definitely not choose option 3, the other two are decent choices depending on your situation. Your situation actually gives you another option, trying to fix the gtx 980, but I do not know much about GPU repair and the plausibility of fixing it yourself without spending a lot of money and a lot of time.

If you're sure it's dead. You can just Google for "GPU repair". There's services that will attempt a repair for you, but also videos and articles about how to do it yourself. I have no idea if any of the advice is legit, but if it's dead anyways, doesn't exactly hurt to try.
