So this just happened to me, I installed an old SATA HDD that i had outside my PC, I put the screws on it, connected SATA power and data, turn on the pc and shuts off inmediatly. So I make the dumb decision and try turn it on again and it boots with a error message. While reading the error message i see SMOKE coming out of my pc case (wich is open) shut it off inmediatly and go close to see the damage. So turns out the cable with the x3 SATA power as overheated and i dont know why. The most affected cable is the red wich i think is the 5v one. The SATA connector in both the HDD and the cable are unusable now. The big sad, just expect nothing is broken. Disconnect the burn SATA cable from everything and boot again. PC boots to BIOS and recognizes the other 2 HDD and the one SSD so i shut it off.

My question is = Can i use the PC with this faulty PSU (without connecting anything to the burnt SATA cable) until i save money for a new one?

More insight = the PSU is the Thermaltake SMART 600W +80 PLUS (Now I know is a bad one, didn't do a lot of research before buying it, also i didn't have a lot of money at the time) CPU= R5 5600x, GPU= RX 570 (I know its very old but prices are crazy now, more if you live in Argentina) plus x2 3.5" HDD, x1 2.5" SDD, 2 case fans I believe 80mm im not really sure (those are connected by MOLEX tho)

Also the replacement PSU im thinking in buying is the "Corsair Cx650 80+ Plus Bronze" because its sort of in my budget and it has a decent position in the PSU Tier List, what do ya'll think? Thanks for reading, sorry for the bad english I learned watching Linus 20210413_012224.thumb.jpg.8bbf27a51021884694f0131f30746fcc.jpg

your power supply isn't faulty , more than likely your sata connector was or the drive was and it melted the cable.

Remove the damaged sata connector from the cable and cap off the ends. The power supply might actually still be fine.

Makes sense. But it burned the cable all the way thru the x3 SATA. More specifically the red one. My fear is that the other x3 SATA in the PSU will burn too. Really scared by the idea of losing my data 😕

I might try the removing the burnt SATA connector, but im trying to use the warranty to get a new one and sell to grt money and buy a best PSU. If i do that i think it would void it. Its all about time and patience

Thanks for answering 🙂

You should be backing up your data regardless of the pc's current condition.

That old HDD was the backup T_T i was installing it again to update it. Also even HDD are not that cheap in Argentina, but its in my plans to get more in the future, thanks for the advice 🙂
