Budget (including currency): N/A

Country: Canada

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: PUBG, COD Warzone, RUST, etc. Mostly FPS Shooters

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc):

I currently own a pre-built camping PC purchased in 2018; the ASUS STRIX ROG GD30CI (see link here: https://www.newegg.com/asus-gd30ci-db71-gtx1080ti/p/N82E16883221436)

I'm struggling with my FPS in shooter games. For example in Rust I'm averaging around 50-60 frames per second, whereas friends of mine with similiar builds are running 70-80 frames. I'd like to push closer to 100+.

I recently upgraded my GPU from a GTX 1060 to a RTX 2070. I saw a very modest increase in performance. I suspect the CPU is bottlenecking so my main question is what I hsould do to boost my performance?

Could I purchase a newer, higher performing 7th gen CPU and would it be compatible with my motherboards? Thinking for example an Intel Core I7 10700K? or 9700K?

A year ago I also upgraded my ram. I'm running 32GB of ran (2x 16 GB sticks) @ 2133 Mhz.

Here are some of my other specs:

CPU: Intel Core I7 7700

GPU: RTX 2070

Motherboard: ASUS GD30CI

Monitor: Viewsonic 27" 144hz

Thanks in advance for any advice/guidance.

James

I couldn't find a motherboard under that name on Asus's website, search results for that term spit out the prebuilt pc.
That being said both amazon and newegg say that the mobo inside that prebuilt is using: Intel H270 chipset.
That chipset supports up to intel 7th gen (https://ark.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ark/products/98090/intel-h270-chipset.html) (click on Compatible products).
So you are pretty much maxed out with your I7 7700.
You could get the 7700K variant, but that would be a waste of money on a tiny perf. improvement, also you'd need to check if your mobo's bios supports it.
In order to determine which board exactly you got in there you should either take the side panels off and look for the markings on the board or try using software (like Speccy, Aida64, HwInfo etc.). But again, waste of time and money for such a tiny improvement.

So if you wanna upgrade, you are gonna have to upgrade: MOBO + CPU.
RAM can stay, but if you decide to switch to Ryzen then you really should get faster RAM as well.

Forgot to tell you, 10700K is 10th gen, 9700K is 9th gen... I know their naming is confusing but still you should know. Again nope, you can't.

don't really need to upgrade your gpu, but the 7700, or 7700k, is really starting to show its age with only 4 cores instead of the usual 8 on an i7, so cpu and motherboard are a must if you what the top performance in games, preferably Ryzen

Don’t take everything I say seriously

take it with a grain of s a l t
