Upgrade Question:

I want to switch from an i9-9900 to a Ryzen 7 5800x, but I am concerned that I will be GPU bottlenecked. I have been an Intel user for the past decade, but lately, I have grown increasingly frustrated with their product lineup, especially in the desktop space, and would finally like to switch to team red. I'm blown away by Ryzen 5000's performance, and I think it's a good time to make the switch. I initially wanted to upgrade my GPU from an MSI RTX 2060 Super to a 3060ti or 3070 but was unable to obtain a card at earthlike prices. So, I've decided to wait on getting a GPU until the end of this year or possibly early next year. However, I still would like to upgrade my CPU, but the question is, will a 5800x be bottlenecked by my 2060 Super, or will I gain performance in terms of gaming? I'm inclined to believe that I'll be GPU bottlenecked, but I thought I would ask you all for some advice. However, if I only upgrade my GPU in the future, would I then be bottlenecked by my i9-9900? I currently game at 1080p 144hz but would like to game at 1440p 144hz in the future. I have better luck finding the Holy Grail than getting a GPU at MSRP right now (LOL!). I can get a 5800x at MSRP from BestBuy, but the 5600x is still sold out online. I was also enticed by the 5600x due to its insane performance with only six cores. I use my desktop for gaming and working in Unreal Engine 4, but I would like to start recording more of my gameplay and maybe do a little streaming. I felt that the 5800x could take some stress off my GPU in terms of encoding. My GPU is hit hard in terms of thermals and fan noise when using Nvidia NVENC while gaming and recording in Streamlabs OBS.

Any advice or recommendations is much appreciated!

I have a i9 9900k computer right beside a R7 5800x computer

The 5800x is only slightly faster than the i9 stock at 1440p but a lot faster at 1080p.

The i9 was in a editing rig that used a 2080 ti to do encoding in Premiere. It was replaced by a Intel 6 core because the i9 developed an issue with the 2080 ti. The 6 core i7 has a 5.1ghz all core overclock and can beat the R7 5800x and i9 9900k in games but struggles a lot more than the i9 did working with Premiere. So I would not recommend using less cores.

To a 5800x your GPU would be the bottleneck. It is a good match with my RTX 2080 ti and will be a better match when it gets a 3090.

I am happy with the performance of the 5800x since I bought it for better performance on single thread rendering.

You may need more cores than 8 to make a good upgrade so a R9 5900x would be better.

To me the 5800x is fine with 8 cores since my GPUs do all the heavy lifting now.

Thanks for the advice! I mostly game at 1080p for the better frame rates in games, I really want to upgrade my GPU first, it’s just impossible to get one, lol!
