Budget (including currency):  $1500-$1600 USD

Country: United States

Games, programs or workloads that it will be used for: I am going to be doing 3D design (in fusion 360) and slicing for my 3D printer as well as playing and recording games (mostly Minecraft).

Other details (existing parts lists, whether any peripherals are needed, what you're upgrading from, when you're going to buy, what resolution and refresh rate you want to play at, etc): I am new to PC building and this is my first build, so I am starting with no knowledge of how to build a PC. I am currently using a Macbook Pro so I can't do what I really want to do on it (this is my reason for wanting a new computer). The resolution and refresh rate I am going for are 1440p and 144 Hz. I don't need this built anytime soon so waiting another year to buy a graphics card or other parts isn't a problem.

Everything is subject to change. I need help on getting the most bang for my buck, making sure I am not buying something that is overkill/insufficient, and making sure everything I have is compatible. Any other types of suggestions are also welcome.

Im also ok with being over budget if it is less than $100

Here is what I came up with.

What’s wrong with the RAM OP listed? It’s overpriced but it’s not a bad kit

Agian Nothing its just that this one is $3 more for 3600Mhz his ram is 3200mhz

Well

Also it is CL18, not CL16 like the orignal kit was

That RAM kit you listed is still overpriced. 3600 CL18 kits for go for around $10 less.

Especially if you're planning to build a year out from now, I'd be going with at least 5800X for the CPU. It seems you're well under budget (assuming MSRP on the 3070). 5800X will give you better performance, and will also let you use resizable BAR for gaming.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D · Cooler: Noctua NH-D15S Chromax.black · Motherboard: Gigabyte Auros X670 Elite AX · RAM: G.Skill Flare X5 64GB (2 x 32GB) DDR5 6000MHz CL30 · Graphics Card: Zotac NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 Super Twin Edge OC 12GB · Boot Drive: 1TB XPG Gammix S70 Blade NVMe SSD · Game Drive: 2TB WD SN850X NVMe SSD · PSU: Seasonic Focus GX V3 1000W 80+ Gold · Case: Fractal Design North Mesh · Monitor: MSI Optix MAG342CQR 34” UWQHD 3440x1440 144Hz · Keyboard: EPOMAKER x Aula F99 Wireless Mechanical Keyboard · Mouse: Logitech G309 Lightspeed Wireless Gaming Mouse

Are you sure a 5800x would be compatible with what is on my list? I put it into my Pc Part Picker and it said it might have compatibility issues.

I hate to be the guy who cares about a case but may I ask why you suggest changing from what was on the list?

Few pointers for ya!

  • 850W PSU's overkill for that kind of build, a 650W/750W will do just great.
  • Graphics cards are really unstable when it comes to finding one in stock and finding one at a good price (getting one at or next to MSRP is impossible unless you literally win a lottery). Depending on how much you're willing to wager I'd recommend setting apart a decent chunk of money ($800 or so) for your GPU if you plan on buying it within the next few months or so. Summer-Fall 2021 is when things start to get fuzzy, so maybe prices will start going down by then, maybe they won't.
  • Your RAM's just fine. If you'd like RGB then Corsair Vengeance RGB RAM is also a good choice; it's more mainstream, from the same brand and is also only about $5 more than your current kit (at the time of writing this, at least).

B550 (and X570 as well) have, uhhh, inconsistent support for 5000-series CPUs, though even if it doesn't come with 5000 support right out of the box you can still make it compatible with a BIOS update. Your specific board (B550 Tomahawk) has support for doing this via USB drive. Here's a tutorial for how you can do this:

If you still wanna go with 3000 CPUs, though, those are guaranteed to work with B550 and X570 right out of the box without any fancy BIOS updates being required.

3700X is by far the best bang-for-buck CPU you can get, as it still does its job pretty spectacularly as a Ryzen 7 while not being as pricey as newer 5000-series CPUs. If you have the room in your budget, though, there's definitely nothing wrong with the 5800X provided you know how to update it.

Perfectly compatible. It might be talking about the mobo potentially needing to have its BIOS updated, but that's with any AMD board. There B550 and X570 boards have been out on the market long before the Zen 3 processors were a thing. New boards will have the latest BIOS when they roll off the line, but boards that have been sitting on a shelf for a while will need an update.
