I’m hoping someone can help me with an annoying problem I’m having with my PC.

I recently took the plunge and fully upgraded my home rig after about 7 years but I’m having a persistent issue that I can’t seem to figure out how to fix.

Randomly, the PC will freeze and have to be restarted via the power button. Originally this was happening when the screen was off so I didn’t know if anything else was still running, however the RGB light were still active. The screens would wake up but just display a black screen. An external HDD light was still on and flashing as if data was still being written to it. Usually this is happening while I’m watching something via Plex on my TV with the PC running as a media server.

Noticeably, the RGB on the memory sticks have been set to a uniformed colour scheme via iCue, but when the PC crashes they default back to showing each stick cycling through the colours.

I have had it freeze on me while using the PC, the time it did it the memory RGB did the same as a previous freeze, but I could still move the mouse about, minimise and resize windows, but not much else. I couldn’t restart the PC from Windows nor could I get into a Ctrl-Alt-Del state to rest.

Recently I came across a thread that mentioned checking the firmware of the memory, which I did via iCue and the first time I tried to reflash it, it crashed. The second time it went through no problems and the PC ran fine for a few days inclduing being left on over night. Now today, it’s back to freezing as I've had it do it twice today.

I’m hoping someone has a solution to this cause it’s driving me up the wall.

The spec is as follows:

AMD Ryzen 5800X

Asus ROG Strix B550-F Gaming (Wi-Fi) (Updated to the latest BIOS)

Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 16GB DDR4-3600 CL18 (2x8GB) (CMW16GX4M2D3600C18)

Sabrent Rocket 4.0 500GB M.2-2280 NVME

Zotac GeForce RTX 2060

Corsiar H800i Liquid cooler

NZXT H500 case

Corsair RM 850W PSU

Windows 10 Home

Pick up a better set of memory.

This kit should be good to go, nice and stable.

Thanks for the suggestion but I'd rather not have to spend money on more items after just buying this.

I understand, but you could return the vengence garbage and utilize that money to buy some quality memory ICs. The link is Samsung B-die, actually the exact kit I have. It will pretty much cure your random hangs and restarts. This issue comes mostly from the memory. Likely SK Hynix which has never played well on any Ryzen Generation yet. You can search the forums for your exact issue and over 80% of the threads, the user will have corsair vengence installed. Also, the timing set of 16-16-16 seems to be a sweet spot for most Ryzen builds for performance.

I also have experienced the same issue, because I also have Corsair vengence memory. It's sitting on my desk in front of me. The issue is I can't even sell it because I know the issues it'll give someone. The F'ed up part is they will pass a memtest..... but means nothing once the OS is loaded and trying to do something constructive even if it's just web browsing.

Alternatively I can give a list of settings you could try and tweak with to help aid the issue, but I'm afraid it won't go away.

So I've resorted now to suggesting a higher quality memory IC instead. Only because from experience, it's the only thing I know that actually works 100% and you don't have to change anything in your bios.

I can give you recent screen shots (within the last 25 days) of my Ryzen Athlon 220ge Memory OC with vengence vs the kit I linked if your interested to see the difference.

Vengence, random restarts and hangs. low OC, timings to frequency OK at best. Swapped to my Trident memory and it was a night and day difference. Wanna see??

Unfortunatly I think I'm beyond the return window for the memory.

It actuially did it again a few minutes ago while I was copying a file and had a video playing on YouTube. Screen froze but the sound continued then I was able to pause it to see if the PC would come back. Didn't and watched as one of the memory sticks colour cycle went out of sync with the other one.

The memory stick you posted isn't avilable in the UK from what I can see, would this be a suitable alternative?: https://www.newegg.com/global/uk-en/g-skill-16gb-288-pin-ddr4-sdram/p/N82E16820232491

A very suitable alternative.

Sell your other memory ebay local or something.
