so just started using an old tv that wasn't being used as a HDMI output for my gaming rig in portrait view to cut cost on a reference screen. i reduced the tv to the smallest res possible in an attempt to reduce gpu cpu usage and avoid blowing up the tv. is there any other way to underutilize the tv/2ndmonitor to avoid damage and reduce performance compromises.

Welcome!

I'm assuming the second screen is simply being used to display stuff like web browsers, discord, etc. while gaming. Is that right? Is so then the impact of running such a screen is negligible for any CPU/GPU.

yes mostly apart from when the second screen is playing YouTube while I write this message and am not gaming. given that the 2nd monitor/tv is not designed to filter heat vertically. which is a main concern and not having the ability to overclock on all cores using all threads on my 9400f i5 processor and only turbo clocking on the single thread

Not an issue. You'll be fine running it at full resolution.

As @RAS_3885said... You should be fine with those specs. Very little difference adding a 2nd display to a 1660. Your computer doesn't care if it's a TV or a monitor, just how many pixels are there and how are they oriented.

so you also think it isn't a necessity to reduce the heat from the incorrectly orientated tv in any way. its just me being overly careful

You'll be fine. People run passively cooled displays in the vertical orientation all the time with out issue.

You're fine. Unless you're in an area with extreme temperatures, if that's the case, it's likely your PC components would be throttling much more than a TV would

not in summer anymore but I did need to rethink my builds fan configuration cause was throttling and hitting 90'c on idle 50'c heats in my area fixed it now have stable 50s all the time 45 on idle. probably the reason i got so concerned and wrote this post
