Graphics card fried

Smd127

So my sons computers graphics card died , it was Evga 1060 6gb B-stock. I was able to get an rma. My question is: is it posible to test the pcie on the power supply to make sure that it was a faulty card and not faulty power that caused the card to go up in smoke , or am i stuck buying a new Power supply to be sure . Thank you聽

Well a cheap power supply can cause all kinds of trouble and is generally not recommended. I would say it is more likely that the GPU was defective since it was B-stock, but that's just my guess. I don't know too much about it, but I think nothing you can just find in your kitchen drawer will help you out here. If you had聽a device like in this video you could test the individual parts:聽https://youtu.be/hLWFJ91gKSo

You can look at the tier list for a recommendation, or maybe see if you find your current model on there. If you have a cheap no name PSU I would suggest replacing it either way.

Yeah I would agree, nothing wrong with used hardware really, there are a lot of good cheap parts out there. I would always make an exception for the PSU though. Imo聽it has to be good quality for the longevity of all your other parts and聽maybe get an 80+ gold model to save a bit on the power bill later on.
