Have you tried it in different  USB ports? Different PCs? Different Operating Systems? Does the drive get a lot of use? Please tell us any other information you think will help us figure out what the problem is :)

I don't really know what else to suggest. I had several USB drives start acting like this and it turns out they were all broken after years of use (and abuse). I managed to recover some of the data through careful positioning of the drive, but ultimately they were dead :(

You may be able to recover the drive itself by formatting it with a piece of third party software, but you would lose all of the data on the drive. Sorry I can't be of more help, it may just be broken :(
