Couple days ago I booted my store brought. Everything was normal but when I made it to my desktop my mouse can move but I can't click anything or when i put my mouse over something it doesn't glow up around it and then my toolbar, start button, and items on my desktop disappears then comes back. I am pretty ignorant about PCs as a whole but I do understand the basics. So, I went to run a PC test it says that that my "DST Short Test" for my Hard Drive had failed multiple times. I checked the wiring and everything was fine then checked how much GB I have left thinking it was that, I have 175GB of 250GB left. I researched and saw that I could use my windows vista CD that came with the PC and maybe fix it, I followed the steps and the out come was nothing. I don't know much about this problem or have I any experience about this problems so I came to asks for help

sounds like a failing hard drive, go to "computer" and right click on your C: drive, and go to "properties" and a window should pop up. Go to the tools tab and where it says Error Checking, click the button "Check Now" and it will schedule on the next restart of the computer, its gonna try and Fix the hard, Chkdsk(is the name of the Error Checking) does not Repair bad sectors on the HDD sadly. This might help a little but if this continues HDD sounds like the culprit, but in some cases the Operating system is corrupted and needs to be restored.

try the stuff, in the above post first. if that dosnt work

1#   McAfee and other anti-virus programs may cause the DST Short Test Failure error to generate. Other corrupted applications may also throw the error. by the way it sounds. a program is trying to load, but hings the system.

try,  to Re-install the anti-virus program, or return your computer to an earlier point in time with System Restore.

or try

2# you could try to burn . a copy of ( hiren's bootcd 15.2 ) to a cd or load it onto a usb drive and boot your system to that. then run mini-xp from the cd or usb drive. and do the testing on your hard drive .

there is lots of other tests you can do from the cd. you can test every thing from mother board,  to memory,

you may want, a freind with deeper. computer know-how to help with #2
