Hi,

I just upgraded my computer, it worked fine for just over 2 weeks, but now I'm getting random crashes, the computer will just shut off, only sometimes giving me a BSOD, often after this the BIOS won't detect any boot drives and I will need to restart it a couple of times to it working again.

The PC will also crash sometimes when starting up a game, I did have XMP enabled to run my RAM at 3600Mhz (no other settings changed) but have since tuned it back off, this has lead to less frequent crashes. Also when turning the motherboards EZ System Tuning to anything higher then normal, it will just show a black screen after the windows logo.
I also have a problem with one of my storage drives, it's a Toshiba 2TB HDD (just storage dive not set up in any type of RAID), sometimes the PC will not boot with it installed, sometimes not even posting to the BIOS. system will still crash when drive is not installed though.

In the device manager it was showing PCI Device and SM bus controller drivers where missing, I have since installed those drivers, Device manager is also showing another driver missing but it is listed as 'Unknown Device' I'm not sure what driver to get to fix this.

System Spec:
OS: Windows 10 Home Edition 64bit
Motherboard: ASUS TUF Gaming Z490-PLUS
CPU: Intel i9-10850k
GPU: Gigabyte Aorus GTX 1080ti Xtreme Edition 11GB
RAM: Corsair Vengeance PRO DDR4 16GB (2x8GB) 3600Mhz (in slots A2, B2)
PSU: Corsair CS650M 650W (this is about 6 years old)
OS SSD: Samsung 860 EVO 1TB

If anyone can help me work out what the problem is that would be great.

thank you

That is kinda weird. I'd say it's one of two problems: a bad SSD or a bad motherboard. If you have another drive you can install windows on and see if it's still the problem, do it and see if it's still giving you issues. You could also try the drive in another system and see if it's giving you issues in there as well. If it is still giving you issues, contact ASUS and try to RMA the board, or if you bought it at somewhere like Micro Center, try to return and replace.

I had the drive working in the old system and had no problems with, it is a new SSD with install from the old system, not sure if that could cause problems, but I can try another SSD with a fresh install.

also to note I nether had any problems with the Toshiba drive until the upgrade.

I am also wondering if it could possibly be PSU issue (it is getting old) as the problems occur more with higher power draw, when I do get games running the PC will shut off after about 20-30mins of play for higher demanding games.

thanks for the reply.

It is sounding more and more like a mobo issue. It is possible to be a PSU issue, and if you want to spend the money to swap it out, it would be easier to swap than a motherboard. That being said, it still sounds like a mobo issues, specifically with the SATA controller. It's probably spitting out errors, causing it to not post properly. The issue with it gaming for 30 minutes then crashing could just be a fluke, or maybe the VRMs on the board are also starting to go as well. Either way, I'd try to RMA the board with ASUS.

I guess I will need to get an RMA on the mobo, as you said the problem seems to relate to the SATA controllers more then anything else.

thanks for the help.
