gpu Does Windows 98 Support the NVIDIA GeForce 7200GS?

I have a spare Windows 98 PC and a 7200GS. I'm wondering if I they're compatible with each other?

Finding drivers is your biggest issue.

Yeah @LogicalDrm. The oldest driver I can find from NVIDIA is for Windows 2000.

IIRC should work. Though this was time before I was really into PCs, so I really can't remember if Win2000 drivers were compatible with Win98.

Idk since the os architecture is different, I reckon it would not be compatible, since 2000 is on the NT kernel, while 98 is still DOS based

Not officially. There are modded drivers that the guys on MSFN have made to make it work. But nothing from Nvidia. BFG also once had a modded driver for Windows 98.

 

I'm working on trying to get it to work on a 8800 GTS.

 

I added one driver. Next post will have the other.

I recently picked up a P31 motherboard and a few PCIe cards that should work as well. Will definitely let you know my results too!

i use an asus en7950gt 512mb DX9 PCI-e for windows 98se,
on a Gigabyte GA-G31M-ES2L,
dual core E5400 2.7ghz OC@3.25ghz in bios,
3gb ddr2 533,(oc 800/1066)
with either a sound blaster live ct4760 or ct4620 with liveware 3.0

onboard audio is HD which is not 9x compatible (i keep it disabled in the bios)
(since this is an ICH7 board, sound in dos is not possible, but in 98 it sounds great)

 

i'm also running windows 7 x64 for pcsx2 dx9,

dolphin dx9 for gamecube

pc games upto 2010/11 (struggles)

and win10 x64 for browsing/music/videos

hence the overclock

 

dont use the first driver that was posted i think i had problems with this one, after install my desktop would go out of

range, turned out the display had been rotated 90 degrees??

 

use the second, i'm sure this is the updated one

 

when you start the driver the black window with nvidia logo should say tweaked drivers for geforce 6xxx,7xxx,8xxx. etc

in white text at the bottom, if not its the wrong one.

 

the driver doesnt officially support 7 series cards, so wont detect your nvidia chipset and will therefore not install,

you have 2 options the first i would not recommend

 
1. install your drivers manually from control panel>add hardware>have disk>install driver from specific folder

something like that (from memory)

this will install your card but not the nvidia control panel, you may not be able to change colour from 16 to 32 bit and

may not have all resolutions in display properties, its not really a full stable install.

2. the way i do it is to use a card that is supported/recognised by the driver,

i use a geforce 6200 pcie, install the driver, when the system asks to reboot, i power off and swap the card for my

7950gt and power back on, your card should be detected and will finish installing with the nvidia control panel

 

(also fyi i always install 98se with 1gb of ram and never had any problems using various motherboards not just this one)

 

SORTED!

 

i do get the shutdown error with the 512mb card, with the failure to write to aux text,

just means i have to hold the power button to switch off,

since i had to do this with my pc back in 1998 its no big deal.

 

512mb also prevents you from restarting into dos, as theres no chance of having sound working in dos

im not too bothered

 

i tried R.Loews NVSIZE driver patch, which limits your vram to 256mb and allows you to boot into dos,

for those that dont mind dos games without sound
i still get the shutdown error just without the text and you still have to hold the button to power off,

Also after installing windows 98, chipset drivers should be your priority without these dont expect anything to work,
especially gpu/driver

 

i use modified machine files for ICH7 from LoneCrusader for chipset,nusb36 for intel usb, R.Loews ram patch

stay away from win98/me service packs they seem to do more harm than good, if you dont need it, dont install it!
 

vogons and msfn have been a big help for me, couple of names i'd like to mention in particular R.Loew, LoneCrusader.
without their work in the 98 scene either individually or collaborativley, this wouldnt be possible.

and also everyone else there who has given their input, the posts going back years have been really helpful.

the pc arrived, stuck the gpu in, and it doesn't work

 

well at least I can still play doom and duke nukem 3d on a pentium
