How good is an i5-10400F as a budget CPU compare to something like an i7 10th gen?

The i7 10700 is quite a bit better 1 because it has more cores and 2 higher clock speeds but if you arent pairing the 10400f with anything above a 2060/2070 you should be fine and wont experience bottlenecking.

If you're just gaming and not 1080p super high refresh, it will perform almost the same as the other Intel CPUs, even an i9-10900k with something like an Radeon 6800/3070/3080.

Well I'm doing light gaming at 1080p 120/144hz, would it still work?

(games like geometry dash, starbound, terraria, roblox, minecraft, things like that)

don't know about geometry dash or starbound, but roblox/minecrat/terraria you do not need an 8 core CPU for and you could prob get away with an i3-10100

What else you doing with the PC? If its just games the 10400f is a great choice for the price

 

but if you're doing something core-heavy then consider other options. Although the 10400 is still competent just slower. So unless you're making money off whatever else you're doing i wouldn't bother.

Well the bulk of my PC power is used to do gaming but my family also does certain business things and emails on it and I do my homework with it.

Yeah and I'm on a $1k budget so that's why I decided on the 10400F

10400F is a decent chip, best paired with a cheap Z490 or B560 and a fast kit of RAM! ;D
