I'm building a PC soon with a Ryzen 7 5800X and an MSI MAG B550 TOMAHAWK.

Do I need to update the motherboard's bios before installing the CPU?

If you buy that mobo, it's possible you may need to update the bios. However you could also get lucky and get one that's already been updated.

How do I know if it's been updated?

Well you won't know until you get it. If you get one that isn't updated, there are ways to get it updated or you could rma it so you can get an updated one.
