FPS for 144 hz

Hi,

If this topic has come up before recently I apologize and feel free to redirect me.

I used to have a desktop computer with a 60 hz monitor and so I always used vsync at either 30 fps or 60 fps depending on the game. I hate screen tearing and I always prefer consistent performance rather than as many frames as possible.

Now I have a laptop with a 144 hz panel but I haven't experimented too much with playing games at different fps. I've pretty much just been targeting 60 fps like I'm used to doing and so far it seems to be fairly smooth for the most part. My question is if there's any benefit for aiming for 72 fps (or 36 fps) and should I use nvidia inspector to cap at one of those limits? On that same note, is having vsync on actually changing the refresh of my laptop screen which is why 60 fps has seemed perfectly fine?

Thanks for your help.

Laptop is GP75 Leopard 9SD. Games I've played lately are Cities: Skylines, MGSV, Flight Simulator 2020, Elite Dangerous. All of these have done just fine at 60 fps, again I think vsync is enabled.

I'm not sure I'm directly addressing your question, but my personal taste in a situation like yours would be to hit that magic 60fps minimum and then focus on settings etc...to enhance the visuals.

But, that's just a personal perspective and it will depend on the game.

Something like Warzone or Fortnite, lower what you need to so you can maximise fps.

Hopefully, I'm not telling you stuff you already know.

Apologies if I have.

Well, I'm still not exactly sure what's happening when vsync is enabled. I just tried playing some Witcher 3 however and turning vsync off and there was definitely hitching due to inconsistent frame rate. I set the limit to 72 and that definitely did the trick. It's just annoying a lot of games still use the 30 / 60 / vsync on or off presets. I supposed half rate sync might give me 72 but that definitely is above the capabilities of the 1660 Ti on some games, at least with decent visuals.
