Surveillance system

MickeyCoquin

Hi

i'm looking for advice for a board that will be used for surveillance, i read that it can be done with a rpi and a camera module.

Will it possible to ad external drive ? Will the board deliver enough power to handle the hdd ?

If not can you recommend alternatives ?

Thanks

As far as I know the Raspberry Pi cannot power a full sized HDD, but there are powered add-on boards that you can buy or there are sata->USB adapters but would most likely recommend them to be run on a powered hub (I had to run a USB soundcard from a powered hub on my old Pi 2b for example).

Edit: or you could look into external HDDs

Whoops, thanks for the correction, then I don't see the problem with a powered hub (I used to use an Anker 7 port hub and it never let me down) and an external drive then.

No problem 😀. Looking at the raspberry pi 4 it seems that, as long as you have a good enough power supply for it (the forums rightly so recommend the official power supply), you can power external SSDs, there are some videos from ExplainingComputers as well of dekstop SSDs being powered just fine using an adapter, here are those if you are interested:

Older one still using the Pi 3: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubnwvxF3Klc

Pi 4 using an SSD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpvlEbdA6qI

Another Pi 4, this time using an external SSD: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3ddj9_LMgU

Then there’s various threads on the Pi forums: https://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=192890

I dont know if this is what you are looking for but look into Synology and Reolink. I have deployed and maintained quite a few and I like them alot. Setup will be easier. As far as I know any NAS/ Survelance box they make can run cameras. The downside is you have to buy a license for ever camera past 2. (Its a one time fee though). I also use lots of the Reolink RLC-410 cameras and they work well with the synology.

Might be out of the range you are looking to spend but you get lots of cool features including a NAS
