Lost Network Drive Connection

Go to solution Solved by AHaskin14,

While the \\ IP worked one time, it did not last. Ended up following this guys video to a solution that seems to still be working after restarting all computers a few times. Applied this to both computers for good measure.

Control Panel > Programs and Features > Turn Windows features on or off > SMB 1.0/CIFS File Sharing Support > SMB 1.0/CIFS Client

So I've been using my storage/Plex server just fine for a while now. After a few power failures that caused the computer to be assigned a new IP address, I set it up as static, so that IP/Port would always be forwarded.

Since doing so I have not been able to "see" my network drive from my main computer. I can do the reverse, in that I can see my main computer from the server, but that's it. Same goes for my laptop that had been working fine.

I've tried undoing the static IP and setting everything back to automatic, but that's not fixing it.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Can you ping the server?

If you can try going into File Explorer and from the navigation bar enter:

\\IP-of-server

Also make sure Network Discovery is enabled on both but if it was working previously this shouldn't be the issue.

Network discovery was running on my main, but I'm not even seeing it listed on the server. Interesting...

Network Locations? Microsoft's implementation of Network Locations has been broken forever. I've never trusted it to work when I need it to. If you've already set a static IP on your server I'd just use that to re-attach your network drive. It's more dependable than hostnames IMO.

Just in case, I do need to ask did you reserve the IP in your Router so the router can't hand out that IP by mistake? Want to help you prevent future headache.

Ya I've got no problem pulling it up over the IP if I need to, just happy to have the access back.

I had not reserved it, only forwarded the port. I will look into doing that now.

Thank you so much for the help!

If it's the only Static IP on your network reserving it is your easiest option you just need the MAC address of the NIC in the server. If you have many multiple Static IP's for various servers I'd shrink the DHCP pool so you have a whole range of addresses ready to use.
