Hello all;

Can someone recommend the best 32GB option for the below setup; no price cap. Or would it be better to purchase 2 additional sticks and just run 4x8? I've ran CPUID and they are single rank

CPU: AMD Ryzen™ 9 5900X 3.7GHz [4.8GHz Turbo] 12 Cores/ 24 Threads 70MB Total Cache 105W Processor

MEMORY: 16GB (8GBx2) DDR4/4000MHz Dual Channel Memory (GSKILL Trident Z RGB)

MOTHERBOARD: MSI MPG B550 GAMING CARBON WIFI ATX w/ RGB, WiFi 6, 2.5 Gigabit LAN, 2 PCIe x16, 2 PCIe x1, 6 SATA3, 2 M.2 SATA/PCIe

POWERSUPPLY: 850 Watts - Thermaltake Toughpower GF1 Series 850W 80 PLUS GOLD Ultra Quiet Full Modular Power Supply

VIDEO: MSI GeForce RTX™ 3070 GAMING X TRIO 8GB GDDR6 Video Card (Ampere) [VR Ready]

I do hope you know that running the ram at faster than 3600mhz gives you worse performance than running it at 3600mhz right? It's because at 3600mhz it runs 1:1 with the memory controller and results in the best performance.

So you could sell this ram as people will want it and it seems to be a good overclocker and get a regular 3600mhz working set for 32gb. Just check the qvl list on the website for your board of what is officially supported with 16gb dimms.

Yes; I did read up on that, and it was defaulting to 2133, so I changed it in bios to 3600

I'm not an expert at these things like you all are, so I appreciate the help! SInce they are single rank would it be better to run 4x8 or just start over with 16x2 of some other type? I would just like to have the best performance for multitasking with this setup and I feel like this ram is a bottleneck for me

The best thing would be to follow the QVL of the motherboard and shop in accordance to that. There is just no better way to do it. My recommendation is look it up and buy whatever is on it and you find to your liking. Also going with memory that is above 3600MHz is not always recommended as memory and FCLK on Ryzen need to be in a 1:1 ratio for best performance. Overclocking FCLK is very tricky beyond 1900MHz so do keep that in mind. Perhaps you will be better with a 3800MHz kit instead.

Just fyi, if you want to leverage dual rank with signle rank sticks you will need to populate all four memory dimm slots.

I'd just sell these on and get a decent kit from the memory support list on the website or a kit someone has tried before. As they really are not the greatest stick for a ryzen system and a bit mismatched.

If you can return em do that.

Thanks again for everyone's help - after looking, and I would like to stay with G.Skill, it seems the ones I like the best are the Trident Z Neo's

Should I go with the 2x16 or 4x8?

G.SKILL Trident Z Neo 32GB (4x8GB) 288-Pin RGB SDRAM DDR4 3600 F4-3600C16Q-32GTZNC

G.Skill Trident Z Neo 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4 3600MHz PC4-28800 CL16 RGB F4-3600C16D-32GTZN

If you all have other suggestions or can explain what would work best and why I would greatly appreciate your time

Like I said in my previous post with 4x8GB you will have the memory running in dual rank mode, meaning you will get the best performance possible. If you care about upgrade path then go for the 2x16GB config. It's as easy as that. Price should be pretty much the same for either kit.

Thanks Analog, I will go with the 4x8, on newegg there are also options for CAS Latency of 14, 16, 18 - do those make a large difference?

Yes, the lower the better. But again check QVL for compatibility.
