So let me start by saying this. I've been building/repairing computers for over 20 years. I have never experienced an issue like this before. This computer belongs to my brother in law who purchased it through me in early 2018. Let's start with the specs:

Ryzen 3 2200G with Vega 8 Graphics

2x4 GB DDR4 G.Skill RipJaw 3200MHZ

Asus Tuf B450-PLUS GAMING

240 GB Kingston SSD.

EVGA 500BR PSU.

So as you can see, he's had this system for almost 2 years. Around xmas time (between xmas and newyears) he contacts me complaining that his computer turns off every 5 minutes, tops. I have him send me pictures of his CPU fan and, sure enough, the thing is cluttered with cat hair and dust. I have him clean his CPU fan and every other fans. Computer works flawlessly for a few days and then all hell broke loose. So here is the symptoms.

1. no post, no beeps, no flash, nadda. Fans will spin but nobody's home (this happens maybe 10% of the time.)

2. I get the Asus Tuff splash screen, the little windows circle will start spinning and will stop. Complete freeze, system must be rebooted.

3. I get into windows... complete freeze within 30 seconds. Nothing responds, has to be rebooted.

I tried changing to a different power supply.

Tried moving his ram around.

Tried a generic stick of Kingston 8 GIG DDR4@2666. (pulled from a working system)

Tried installing an RX580 4GB (pulled from a working system)

Tried reinstalling Windows on a different drive SSD.

Every single time the same behavior. Now again, his system worked FLAWLESSLY for over a year..

I eventually opened a case with ASUS as I believed the motherboard became defective. With an ASUS tech, we successfully upgraded the BIOS to the latest version, same behavior. They agreed the issue was motherboard related. I completed the RMA and received the board, replaced, today and to my surprise... exact same behavior. The board also had the latest official BIOS release V2409 release in December 2020 as the board I ended up sending.

So I went... screw it, even though I've NEVER experienced a dead CPU before... I tried my wife's CPU which is a Ryzen 7 2700,paired with the same RX580 as before and it just works..

Is there ANYTHING I might have missed?

My next step would be to open an RMA with AMD as I am flabbergasted by everything I've experienced thus far with this system.

Thanks everyone!

It sounds unusual. In my experience, CPUs either work or don't. But it appears that you have been quite thorough. The last thing that I would try if I were you, is to try the 2700 in place of the 2200G in the system, with everything else remaining the same. If that works, then you can be pretty close to sure that the CPU is the issue.

I misunderstood this. The RX580 through me off, but you needed it due to the lack of integrated graphics in the 2700. It seems to me you have a dead CPU...

  • 3 weeks later...

Well color me impressed! The whole process is done, received the brand new CPU yesterday and everything works. I managed to squeeze a teeny tiny overclock on the CPU to 3.85 and managed to move the ram from from 2133 to 2400.

This is the part that hurts the most because I remember having him pay more for faster ram (3200) VS more ram at a lower clock knowing that Ryzen, especially the ones with onboard Vega, get a pretty good boost in performance; however, the ram I got (Corsair Vengeance) were never optimized for Ryzen and anything above 2400 bluescreens before posting.

I was going to propose he gets a better, faster kit, optimized this time. Can anyone advise if this kit will actually clock to what it says: https://www.amazon.ca/Patriot-Viper-4000MHz-Performance-Memory/dp/B07KXNGWRF/ref=sr_1_25?dchild=1&keywords=ryzen+ram&qid=1612455459&sr=8-25

thanks everyone!
