Slow front panel usb 3

Im getting slow speeds through my front pannel usb 3 port. Motherboard is msi mpg b550 gaming edge wifi. Case is a raijintek silenos pro.
I have a usb 3 hdd. If i plug it into a usb 3 port on the back of the motherboard, the drive transfers at 100mb/s. If i plug the drive into the front pannel usb 3, it transfers at 40 mb/s. So the front pannel usb 3 is running over 50% slower.

I tried disconnecting the port then plugging it back in. Ive also uninstalled the drivers in device manager and let it rediscover them. It didn't improve anything.

Is this normal behavior? Is it slower because it's a front pannel connector?

It shouldn't be.

 

You don't have the USB 3.0 header connected through an adapter to a 2.0 header perhaps, do you? The speeds are pretty typical of 2.0.

Nope. Its a usb 3 plug straight into the usb 3 port on the motherboard. Im a bit confused by this then. Its a new case but maybe it has a busted port?

It's possible... USB 3.0 still has the USB 2.0 pins, so maybe it's falling back because the 3.0 link isn't being made.
